We all kinda know what the Ragers are, there like the hulk on a bad day.
Mad/Emotional = Smash

Pretty simple concept that could have them at peace being just an average person and when they blow there top leveling cities.

What if there were a character with the opposite.
When they were calm and at peace there powers were at there peak and when they got emotional it faded.
could a character like that work?
How would you classify that effect.
and what powers do you think would work with them?

Me personally I think it would be a neat thing for a number of powers.
but What could make it fun is have an apprentice monk or some such have it.
A person who while disciplined may loose there top.

I don't think the normal super powers like blasts and such would do this type much good. but maybe a Package Psychic, healer, or even speedster might be neat.
seeing them balance there excitement and the rush of there powers with trying to keep centered would be kinda cool.

You may even be able to have a person with two different and opposing power types,
one is a rage ability while the other is a peace ability Mastering both and finding a working balance could make for an interesting story.

What do you think?

Well, sure. If the character does not have instinctive control of her ability, it would demand lots of concentration to use the ability effectively. Which strong emotions tend to disrupt.

It would make for a character who, even if technically very powerful, would be ill-suited to combat. But this could yield a couple interesting situations...

Take, for instance, a powerful TK who is easily disturbed. Not suitable for combat, so our guy takes some quiet job where his abilities are useful -- like, say, making fine jewelry. Then some thugs decide to rob his store. They hold a gun to his head (he panics and promptly loses his power), tie him up and throw him in the back room. Where he has the time and quiet to calm down...

I agree Sir Lee, this would make an unconventional character, they would have to stay even tempered and clear headed to be of any use in a fight.

But there are lots of noncombat roles where something like this could be useful.

This person would probably need to learn meditation and other calming tricks, which may have them looking like a monk or mystic even if they are not.

I can't help but think this kind of mindset would be very good for someone like Chou and would be GREAT for a pacifist.

I think you could make this work in the Whateley world. Perhaps an Avatar who has some sort of calm nature spirit, so when he/she gets angry the spirit shuts down or has a snit. Perhaps a Wizard or Psi or Esper who has a tricky talent they can't control, so losing the temper means losing the ability.

The idea is not emotionless rampage but that a person has to keep there emotions in check or there powers weaken or turn off totally.
I'm trying to think of a comic example of this from some major story set but am drawing a blank, I am not sure that mainstream has any big characters with powers that work like this except Mystics, like Dr. Strange who need concentration to use there power and hold its effects.
This would be similar to that but they would have to go all Jedi and put themselves above there emotions to do there best.
You know, Jedi does fit as an example very well.
it is touched even in the movies that a Jedi is supposed to forgo all extremes of emotion good and bad, and they are supposed to seek to think beyond being swayed by there feelings because that is the path to the dark side.
or in this case that is the path to loosing there power.

Diane
I like that idea, it's pretty cool and would be one way to make the affect happen
A symbiotic Avatar that can't force it's will on the spirit, so they have to work by the spirits rules to get the benefit of its powers. Perhaps the Spirit has a sensitivity to emotions that disrupts it's powers.

To further that thought a person could be an Avatar and have two spirits one that gives powers when they are emotional and the other when they are peaceful and it could be like a sliding scale between the two, a constant struggle for balance.

but that's just a guess, there was talk of an avatar having more than one spirit but I haven't seen it yet except when Jinn and Jann were caught, not sure if that counts though as they are effectively the same person.

Wait yes I have. when Jinn was trying to train to defend against Avatars. So yes an idea like this could work, I think.

There are all manner of abilities that require concentration, but that alone wouldn't be terribly interesting.

I'd take Diane's Avatar idea, and couple it with a physical change so that when the spirit goes off in a huff, the person reverts to "normal". Plenty of options there. My personal favourite would be an Apollonian hero reverting to a mindless jock: a Front Row Union member.
