Strakkaker

A Someone for future fic, this little b*tch actually wasn't responsible for the Acid Test. She takes her name from her most notorious TK technique. Comments?

%%%%%%%%

Strakkaker (Alyssa Westerberg aka. Gustav Oxenstierna)

Gustav Oxenstierna was born around 1946 (the exact date isn't known to even himself). He's a graduate from DeVille Academy (1963) whose contract was sold to Dr. Steelhand, a would-be world conqueror, mad scientist and one of the foremost supervillains of his time. He served Dr. Steelhand for decades in various roles, most importantly as his right-hand 'people man'. Their partnership was stable due to non-conflicting strenghts: Gustav was nearly scientifically illiterate at the time while Dr. Steelhand's personnel management skills were atrocious.

After the unfortunate death of Dr. Steelhand in 1979 by Ms. Might, he became a mercenary for highest bidder and swore revenge on Ms. Might for the death of Dr. Steelhand.

The Stories have it that he was slain '89 in a titanic fight with Lady Astarte, while wearing a prototype power armor. His charred body was recovered from a burnt remains of gas station which had detonated in the fracas.

Unfortunately, this was merely a ploy to retire from public life for an old fox whose face had become bit too famous and who had made some real bad enemies. Enemies like Elizabeth Amelia Carson.

After his "death", Gustav retired to a prepared hideout nursing bitter hatred against Carson. Hatred that was quietly corroding his sanity and fueling plans for revenge. He was far too well known to engage into any public operations and he was getting old, feeling the chill winds of mortality. But could he solve these two problems at same time? This seed germinated into a plan that took him many years to prepare...

Gustav had several reliable contacts and he had the money. Contacts that would not blab about his continued existence and large amounts of cash.

He knew the whereabouts of Carson and her new line of work. The Most promising approach would be infiltrate and a 'freshman student' would be an ideal method.

Gustav had inherited several interesting devises from Dr. Steelhand, being only man alive with knowledge about several of his backup sites. One of those sites included a working (and multiply tested) mind transfer devise. The Only problem was finding a suitable host body. A Mutant host body which could be admitted to Whateley with minimum of fuss and gain him superpowers as a lovely bonus.

Force-grown clones have problems, most prominent of them a thing called "protein antagonism". However, if you have lot of time available and a decent biodevisor working for you, cloning is easy. Gustav had both.

Gustav paid $32M for a batch of clones from one of the blood samples in Dr. Steelhand's archives, obtained from a legendary WW2 "theme agent" who had actually been a mutant: Trude von Stauffenberg, alias "Die Bussard", who had perished in the final days of '45. He made sure that the clone had an active mutant gene complex: Another of the Dr. Steelhand's inventions was Mutant Complex Activator. The Process works only for those with latent gene complex and the fatality rate is 70+%, rising with the age of the subject. Two active clones survived from a batch of 16.

Then, on one dark and stormy night, he fired up Dr. Steelhand's ancient contraption, which worked it's magic. Gustav's old, mindless body was euthanized and cremated along the 'spare' body after successful transfer was verified.

The Second part was more personally involved. A Notorious syndicate psychic named Fable gave her initial training with her PDP talent. However, the important part, secured by a magical contract, was to conceal most of her original personality and memories so that they could surface later. Fable also taught Strakkaker several lethal and unethical techniques that are not in Whateley curriculum, things like Mind Shred and Hydra Wipe...

The Rest was easy. Few bribes at podunk registrar and some subtle memory editation by Fable provided documentation for 14-years old orphan girl and a tragically dead family who left a decent "inheritance" for their only daughter. A Completely normal enrollment followed along placement to Melville.

Then Fable just made a phone call few months later which included a posthypnotic trigger that restored Gustav's full memories...

Note: Fable's part in the scheme is complete and he has been paid. He won't be getting involved any further. Any and all others worked only on parts of the plan and have also been released with substantial bonuses and ferocious NDA:s.

%%%%%%%%
Appearance: A Very beautiful 'aryan' blonde with blue eyes that are just tad too sharply colored to be natural. Some have called her 'the second coming of Freya', but there is no relation.

%%%%%%%%

Personality: Gustav was old, ruthless and experienced. He had been old and losing his touch while world was passing him by. However, the old fire was still there. A New body and opportunity to learn some of that newfangled stuff was most welcome. He was originally nearly scientific illiterate and he'll never be a scientific genius, but he learned the hard way that one can't ignore it in eighties. Whateley is a nice way to get "back on track".

Strakkaker prides on being a woman of her word. When she makes a contract, she does her best to fulfill it and expects same from others. 'Welshing' on her is something nobody does twice. Nevertheless, fortune being a fickle customer, she acknowledges that sometimes you cannot win and he always acknowledges this 'Fortunes of War' factor. She understands honest failure due to unforeseen circumstances, but has a very low tolerance for incompetence or stupidity.

"The fortunes of war flow this way and that, and no prudent fighter holds his enemy in contempt." --J.W. Goethe: Iphigenie auf Tauris, V, 1787.

Strakkaker is awash with enthusiasm of new youth and teen hormones. Old Gustav had been straight, though no stranger to gay sex (it made such a wonderful blackmail tool in old days when people were more uptight about such matters...) and it remains to be seen on which side of the fence strakkaker will fall with her new body.

%%%%

The Plan: Strakkaker intends to have revenge upon Ms. Carson and destroy her utterly. Whateley students and staff are secondary to that objective: Obstacles to overcome and vulnerabilities to exploit. If she can get Carson without killing anyone, all well and good. If not... So be it. She doesn't intend any harm to Whateley or it's students in general, which allows her to slide through many mystic protections. Exactly as planned.

Simply killing her will not do. She must be broken, humiliated and above all, made to break her own principles.

She has read all reports (syndicate and otherwise) about the "Halloween Incident" (which she sat out by being off-campus at the time, having vague premonition and hints that something was coming down) and decided that brute force is *not* the solution. Her revenge will have to be more subtle, but she's more than capable of it. She has four years to simply plan and plot and has no intention of making any aggressive moves before her senior year...

%%%%%%%%

Powers: Package Deal Psychic (TP/ESP/TK) (3,3,3e)

In order to fool telepaths, especially Fuubs, Strakkaker arranged for fast psychic training with one of the more notorious criminal PSI:s. Fable owed Oxenstierna several favors and this was a repayment, although Oxenstierna also paid fable a significant sum for the training and other services. Her psychic shields are very good and extremely difficult to penetrate.

Notable Knacks and Techniques:

*Clairvoyance, Danger Sense, Astral Projector

*Mind Shred: Taught by Fable, this is a lethal psychic attack that literally shreds the targets' mind. Survivors suffer from memory loss and various lasting mental disorders. Psychic Arts department is reluctant to teach this technique and Fuubs is unwilling to touch it. Properly used, this technique can kill without a trace in a very painful and vicious manner.

*Hydra Wipe: A Thorough method of erasing recent memories, by chronological period. Cannot modify memories, but erasure is so thorough that even Fubar can't recover anything. Any memory affected is simply *gone* and the victim has lost a part of his life permanently. Given sufficient time to work (2-3 days), an unethical user of this technique can completely and permanently erase victim's personality, leaving a drooling equivalent of a just-born baby behind.

*Strakkaker: A High-velocity stream of flechettes, launched by TK and shredding flesh in a truly ugly manner. Named after similar weapon in Larry Niven's stories. Unknown to everyone else, she also has a batch of flechettes that are tainted with Saxitoxin.

Being sleepy and writing it in thirty minutes doesn't excuse writing "you" as "u", sorry, and there are words simply missing that kill the flow of the sentences. I'm occasionally guilty of doing the latter myself, but it gets spotted and worked out in the proofreading stage. You could also stand to break things up into smaller paragraphs, because the big blocks of text coupled with the almost stream-of-consciousness writing makes for some quite difficult reading.

I don't like Frank either. I find it hard to like a protagonist who comes out with things like "I'm racist against every race including my own", because that combines the worst qualities of xenophobes with the probable angstiness of the self-pitying loner, and adding "self-hating mutant" into that mix won't make it any better. There's potential there, but if he were my character I'd be pushing him down the same sort of character path as Magneto - a genuine anti-human xenophobe who may or may not think he's a hero.

The problem is, you've tried to make him into a tragic figure, and basic elements are there - kid living in the Bible belt manifests, life as he knows it shatters, flees for his life, leaves family behind to God knows what fate - but I can't care about Frank because...well, to me he's just a dick, a kid who comes off as just a little bit smug as well.

P.S. "But, I'll give it a try so you ass-wipes wont have to stop and ask me for my origin story" is a stupid sentence to put in. Why?

No, honestly, the attack on the DMG s a f!@#up. They were meant to kill her, since she's the most powerful of the lot of them, then move on to the rest of the Nakama.

But they f!@#$d up. The DMG wasn't there when they attacked her home, and she awoke again. This severely screwed up their plans.

Simply put, the remaining creature-dude-thingies no longer have the backup of a billion more of their kind; there's only a few thousand of them left. Now, if they had managed to silently kill off the Magical Girls, the Dragon-mook would have shown up and annihalated Earth. But they didn't, and now they've got active opposition again.

Simply put; one DMG is capable of taking on the remaining creatures alone. The Dragon isn't stupid enough to attempt to kill off the remaining Magical Girls while the DMG is still alive, because of the risk involved. Sure, it would be great to be sure that no more Magical Girls or Action Girls could be awoken, but not if it risks waking them up and facing a full third of the people that wiped out billions of his kind before. Plus, at the moment, the DMG is still moping and angsting; he wouldn't want to risk her turning her full attention to hunting him don.

He's a smart one. He wouldn't even send out his regular mooks to fight the DMG. I'd imagine he'd be slowly corrupting humans, making more of his kind, and rebuilding his forces.

But the DMG ould be fairly active, too, spending hours every day scouring the news for any hints of creature activity, following the signs and killing them off.

They're at an uneasy balance at this point; him killing off the other Magical Girls could quite easily push the balance to her favour. It is simpler for him to just single her out.

The more I think about this, the more I wanna write it But I just don't have the time...

...

So a Paladin might be more powerful than an Avatar or what? And is there a specific list of spirits that might be capable of having a Paladin? Do you have to be an Avatar to be a Paladin, or no?

Any help you can give will be muchly appreciated

Toggle Spoiler

Codename: Overview
Class of 2010
Gender: FtM (straight - attracted to Females)
Classification: Ex 2m/1p, Esper 2
Name: Still working on this
Height: 5 ft 8 in
Weight: 140 lbs
Age: 15
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Grey (Blue originally)
Build/Body Type: Standard
Race/Ethnicity: American of Germanic descent
Place of Birth: US (still in work)

Association: Dickinson Cottage (Fall 2007), ? Cottage (Winter 2007), E-Team (Spring 2008), Muses (Spring 2008)

Appearance: Originally a fairly typical blonde girl, above average model quality looks, but not screaming "Exemplar". Gender change occurs in story during Winter Combat Finals (due to burnout induced during final). Above average blonde boy after change, again model quality but not screaming "Exemplar". Pre-change confident appearance, post-change a bit unsure of himself and getting used to his new appearance.

General Description: Fairly unspectacular Fall term at Whateley as a mental exemplar. During Combat Final makes use of undisclosed aspect of her power over a much larger area than previously used triggering a mild burnout. Gender change occurs during recovery.

Powers: Standard Exemplar 2 mental abilities and Exemplar 1 physical abilities, combined with non-exemplar related Eidetic Memory (pre-manifestation). Undisclosed Esper 2 ability - can "see" a 2D map of surrounding area complete with location of individuals in real-time. Use of power is reliable but does require a bit of concentration to keep track of individuals. Range is limited to 1000 ft radius and one plane (floor) at a time, but he can do different floors one at a time. Because of his Eidetic Memory, it lets him create an accurate 3D map of his surroundings, and even periodically update locations of people within range, floor by floor. Burnout occurs because he strains his range limit during Combat Final. Power levels do not change because of burnout, and range is a hard limit on his power. Gender change is due in part to BIT, and in part because he has a crush on Fey pre-change and it is a means for his body to reconcile with his feelings.

Skills: Mother works for US NavInt and father is US Army Special Forces (currently deployed overseas), and he has learned a great deal about Intelligence and Tactics because of that. Because of background and Combat Final, noted by Deadeye and put on "watch for potential recruitment" list.

Personality: Is fairly reticient to speak up, except when prompted. Is very confident in the areas that he is good in, and tries to always give the bare minimum when prompted for inputs, except with those he trusts. Because of his parents' work, he is very suspicious of people who pry into his background or about personal information, until he decides that they can be trusted. Initially is confused because he is attracted to Fey, even though he thought that he was straight prior to burnout. Now that he is a male, he is having difficulty reconciling his new status with his old, though it does ease his mind about being attracted to Fey. He's just having trouble with the whole "male" part.

Weaknesses: Normal baseline vulnerabilities. Psychological insecurity when outside of knowledge base.

There are three types of mutants in the world. The first love the fact that they are mutants, even dreamed about it as children, wondering that what if type thing. The second are the ones who were going through life and then one day woke up and said "hey somethings different here?" realized what they'd become, shrugged their shoulders and said, "oh well, the world wont stop turning just for me." and kept right on trucking. And then finally you have the type that I fall in to. The, "OH SHIT! Why the FUCK did this happen to me?" kind. I never wanted to be a mutant. Hell, I still don't. And if I could focus on that thought or even nightmares of the future I'm likely to have I'd probably just into a blast furnace and just end it all. Shit! Its hard for me to even remember what happened when I manifested and all the crap I had to go through just to get here. But, I'll give it a try so you ass-wipes wont have to stop and ask me for my origin story.

The dates a little fuzzy, details like time don't mean much to 'The Cat', but it was somewhere around 3 months ago. The I was sitting in mass. That's right shit bricks, I'm a Catholic. Anyway, I'm sitting...OK I was leaning against my mother, god rest her soul, TRYING not to fall asleep when she nudges me and tells me to quit growling. Now, I'm not the most devout follower in the world. I believe in God and Jesus along with heaven I'm just not a true believer in that whole fire and brimstone crap. (boy was I wrong on that one!) Anyway, (sorry for keep getting side tracked but The Cat is hard to keep focused) I jerked myself awake trying to be on the DL that I was wiping away the drool from the corner of my mouth while looking around to see if anyone else noticed. Fat chance of THAT happening. I go to a Church located in the heart of the HOOD. How can there even really BE a HOOD in Louisville Kentucky I couldn't possibly tell you. I mean, how hood can a place be when you have to print out t-shirts that show 8 different ways to say the name of your city. I mean SHIT! Who really says loolvoul. That doesn't even make sense. Anyway, me and my mom are the only Black people in the church and we're surrounded by about 15 or so whites. No I'm not raciest, OK maybe I am but I got good reason. I'm raciest about EVERY race INCLUDING my own. What race other than black people will put up a basketball goal for the neighborhood kids only to have said kids steal the nets OFF the damn goals and then COMPLAIN that they cant tell if they made the shot or not cause they cant get that fucking swish effect. DUH, it's caused by the net you nimrods.

Anyway, I managed to stay up for just a little longer before I rested my head on the back of the pew. I'm not sure how long I managed to sleep before a scream from someone nearby caused me to jump a foot into the air. I looked to my left and this midget of a women with stringy blond hair was pointing at me and screaming so loud my ears threatened to burst. Didn't she realize that she was in church and the preacher was in the middle of his sermon of doing away with the evil mutants and the devils they worshiped. She was quickly sliding away from me still pointing and screaming and that's when several others started in on the screaming too. I looked left and right trying to figure out what was going on and that's when I saw my mom. She was looking up at me with tears streaming down her face. Her lips were shaking as she kept mouthing the word no over and over.

That's when I realized she was looking up at me. I'm short for my age of 12. if I was 5' even by now I'd be lucky so seeing my own mom straining her neck to see me made me look down. My nice blue dress-shirt was gone. Well, not really gone just over there, and a little was over there, and some was still tucked into what was left of my waistband. My navy blue dress-slacks looking about how the Hulk's always looks when he hulk's out on the bad guys. Heck even my dress shoes were in tatters.

"Get him!" I heard someone scream and just as I looked up to see who they were talking about four big guys treated me to a dog pile. Now being short naturally meant that I was prone to the occasional bully episode. So I knew the score. Don't move, try not to scream and they'll eventually leave you alone for more entertaining prey. I lay there under those guys wondering what the hell had just happened to me. I could kinda see through one guys legs and I say the priest running toward us with something in his hand that made a clanging sound on the floor. I should of known what it was when I felt something pinch the hairs on my neck and I felt something in my brain start doing flips. But, it didn't sink in until the guys started to get off me and I could see the priest was now wrapping a chain the size of his arm around one of the support beams of the church. He finally stopped when he added a pad lock the size of his head to the deal and stepped back quickly.

It wasn't until much later I stopped to ask myself where the hell do u get a chain and padlock that fucking big? It wasn't Home depot that's for sure.

"Everyone get back! Get away from the filth!" 'Filth?!? who the fuck was he talking about?' "Larry grab her and lock her in my office the key's just inside the door."

"No! Leave my baby alone! You cant do this!" I heard her scream as some guy who had to weigh 300lbs tossed her over his shoulder and carried her off.

I slowly got to my feet swaying unsteadily not sure how to keep my balance and that's when I noticed a weight on my back. I turned around at the waist, a lot further than I should've been able to, and saw that I had a tail. A fucking TAIL! It was long, looked longer than my leg by half and it was swaying from side to side. OK I knew that a tail on animals was used for balance but the damn thing wouldn't do what I told it to. So I just stood there swaying from side to side like I'd been fucking drinking.

"Derick, that brother of yours still over at the MCO office?"

"Yes sir," he replied to the priest.

"Go call him up and tell him we got one for him." Derick just nodded as he walked outside pulling a cell phone out of his pockets.

"What's going on? What's happening to me?" yeah OK. It was a stupid ass thing to say but what do u expect, I'm freaking 12.

"SHUT UP u gene filth! You will not desecrate God's house with your foulness." then he started chanting. It took a second to realize that he was trying to exercise me. He was actually trying to cast out some kind of demon or something. This went on for some time maybe 5 minutes I'm not sure but in that time Derick had come back in so I supposed that the MCO were on their way. It was obvious to me now that I was a mutant and that meant I had about 5 more minutes before I was done for.

The last kid that turned into a mutant here was killed within 2 minutes of the MCO arriving. And no one even knew if his powers were dangerous. He'd called them on his own and they'd killed him for his trouble. I grabbed the chain and started tugging on it. It clinked along the ground making everybody look at me. I could see the hatred in their eyes and I was really starting to fear for my life.

A noise in the back caught my attention. I hadn't noticed it before because of that retarded language Father Johnson was supposed to be using but from him it just sounded like he was making it up as he went along. It was the sound of someone screaming. A woman's scream. And looking around I noticed Larry hadn't come back. But, before I could think anymore on that I could hear a high pitched whine coming from outside. That had to be the MCO. I had to get out of here but I could still hear screaming coming from the back.

I pulled on the chain with everything I had. But I kept sliding on the cheap hardwood floors. Stepped closer to the beam it was wrapped around as the men around me were yelling at me to stop and Derick ran out the door. But all I could hear was the screaming. I could make out the words now. Asking someone to stop, they were hurting her, and he couldn't do this. I pulled the chain tight leaving no slack between my hand and the pole and put one of my weird looking feet on it and gave it a pull. Nothing. Without even thinking I just lifted the other foot placing it on the beam too and pushed off like I was doing one of those dead-lifts that the jocks brag about doing.

There was a groan of metal, a cracking of plaster and finally a single clink and one of the links gave way sending me flying through the air. I bowled over two guys before I finally crashed to the ground breaking several pews in the process but I didn't even think about the pain as I was up and running on four legs to the back of the church.

As I hit the hall that I knew led to the Fathers office I could clearly hear the sounds coming from behind the locked door. The whimpers of pain the grunts of effort from someone who obviously didn't work out. And the laughter. I think that's what set me off. The sick fuck was rapping my mother and he was laughing about it. Taunting her that no one would care cause she wasn't shit. Just another whore with a mutant for a son. She was just as low a life form as I was.

I crashed through the door without even thinking that it might hurt to do that to a door that looked like solid oak. That's when the smell assaulted me. OK, I'm pretty sure I could smell it from outside but it was like my brain didn't want to register it till just now. I knew just from the smell that he'd forced himself on her. I could smell her fear, her shame and her utter hatred for the man.

Not to mention the scent of pure joy of being able to dominate someone weaker that was wafting of him like heat off the sand of the Sahara. A noise erupted from me that was a cross between a hiss and a roar and Larry jumped right out his skin, and my mother, to his feet. He stood there bloated belly hanging down covering the obviously to small and shriveling thing he called a dick that was dripping my mothers blood. And....I lost it. I'm not to sure what happened. I remember seeing images of the fear on his face just before I ripped 4 slashes out of it with my claws.

I remember howling in pain at burning sensations and seeing spots of red flying away from me to land on my screaming mother. And her body jerking soon after.

I a helmet with a mirrored visor just before I saw it wrapped around my forearm.

I remember lifting my mothers limp body tattered clothes and all. Cradling her to my chest and kicking out the back door.

And I remember running. Lots and lots of running.

I'm not sure how long I ran, 2 days maybe? Could've been 3. all I know was that when I finally woke up and took a look around I was surrounded by woods, I was dirty, and my mother was nowhere to be found.

Okay, based on all the feedback I've received so far on Boombox, updated info in the spoiler.

Toggle Spoiler

Codename: Boombox (Boomer for short)
Class of 2010
Gender: Male (straight)
Classification: Ex 2m, Empath 2p, Energizer 2
Name: Under construction
Height: Under construction
Weight: Under construction
Age: 15
Hair: Dark brown
Eyes: Pale blue (Brown originally)
Build/Body Type: Standard
Race/Ethnicity: American of mixed European descent
Place of Birth: US (somewhere)

Association: Emerson Cottage (Fall 2007), E-Team (Spring 2008), Muses (Spring 2008)

Appearance: Non-descript and average appearance. Loves to annoy people just to get a rise out of them, and has a problem with authority. Also dislikes gangs from his time being in one, and he distrusts gang-minded individuals. The main reason behind his problem with authority stems from his being bored and unchallenged both at school and at home.

General Description: Parents are classical pianist and a music teacher. Taught piano and classical music from a young age. Ran away from parents and hooked up with a street gang, where he learned lockpicking and knife and pistol fighting. Caught by police and sent back to parents, who decide he needs more discipline. Passes grade school with ease, even though he missed a full year of school. Parents have him tested for intelligence and during test starts playing music, revealing himself as a mutant. Tester has worked with mutants before and recommends Whateley.

Powers: Has the ability to reproduce any music he has heard before by vibration of the air molecules within range. Has specialized Eidetic Memory, in that he can perfectly remember any music he has heard before (Hence the Ex 2m classification, baseline human physically) . Empathic ability to influence emotions of people through music. Can turn influence on and off, but cannot control the emotion or the target (all hearing music). Emotion generated is tied to music being played. Can play music within any distance up to maximum range (one block at entry into Whateley) at a constant volume up to loud (but not obnoxiously loud - comparable to a boombox at 10). Eventually learns to selectively target defined areas (such as a single room in a building) but not at start. Uses ability to annoy people by playing appropriate music near them (such an the Baby Elephant Walk or the Jaws theme)

Skills: Skilled at picking locks (mechanical and electronic), skilled at dirty fighting and knife fighting, fairly good with a pistol

Personality: Annoying and sarcastic street punk (think a more mature Bart Simpson crossed with Brian Griffin). Sent to Whateley to keep him out of gangs. Also dislikes gangs from his time being in one, and he distrusts gang-minded individuals. The main reason behind his problem with authority stems from his being bored and unchallenged both at school and at home. Gets along great with Link, who he sees as a sort of kindred spirit.

Weaknesses: Baseline vulnerabilities aside from good resistance to loud noises (lots of loud music without loss of hearing). Use of powers for prolonged periods leave him physically drained.

Okay,

One of the things that struck me from your last description of the effect is that he will NEVER be able to cast magic on himself unless the field becomes consciously controllable. Also, it would be VERY difficult for him to ever learn to use magic, since one of the first things any mage would teach would be to grasp Essence and bring it into yourself to store until you have enough to cast your spell. He'd be unable to store any Essence whatsoever, and even replenishing his internal Essence would be slow and tedious, and might even kill him during the learning process if he tried to cast a spell beyond his internal Essence capacity.

Think of it as a mage being a balloon filled with water, the water being Essence. A spell uses a certain amount of that water. A mage typically would learn to expand and stretch that balloon to an extent by filling and draining the balloon repeatedly over time. Now keep in mind that a mage drawing upon too much Essence at once would cause the balloon to burst, and there is likely to be an upper limit to the size the balloon will ever get. That's what would cause a lot of deaths among mages, doing too much too fast and causing the balloon to burst, and the mage to lose all Essence altogether.

Now in the case of Kadis, if he learned magic the classical way, he'd be unable to fill his balloon except by the trickle filling common to all mages, since he can't draw Essence into himself. That means that any spells he casts during training would have to come from internal energy, constantly draining his internal Essence. This is because of the range of the field, any attempt to draw Essence in the normal way would fail, leading to a mentor to think him untrainable. If he tried casting spells, he wouldn't be able to fill his balloon afterward, and would quickly use up all the Essence within himself. Now, this is traditionally bad, especially in terms of Nature Essence, since it's tied to the person's life force. So likely he would have killed himself long before he would become adept at any spells, especially major ones. Also note that there are spells that require Essence at range, such as ritualistic spells, but the majority of those would not be usable because he wouldn't be able to be the focus of such a spell, since he would not be able to maintain a connection between himself and the Essence of the spell.

Which brings up a question, if he can cast spells at range, how is he controlling the Essence to force it into the spell, if he can't "touch" the Essence? Any connection to the Essence would be terminated at the 60 ft boundary.

This is one of the reasons I suggested the type specific field and rating specific field possibilities. That would open him up to being able to still use magic, if his power level were such that he could still reach Essence through his field. And if it's type specific, then it would affect his specialty type only marginally, letting him use magic even with a lower Wiz rating, and would let him achieve mastery of spells requiring a great deal of power.

Of course, that's based on the common sort of logic behind how magic works. It could also be possible that magic works differently or you could come up with other theories as to why it works.

OK. I'm sleepy and I wrote this while waiting in a driveway to take a friend to work so if this doesn't make sense then i'm sorry. Kadis' field doesn't stop magic it disrupts it temporarily. and taking in the suggestions from Wanderer this is what i've come up with. example: his zone is a sphere with a radius of 100 feet. up to say 60' is absolutely no magic usage and from there becomes progressively easier to use. this is where the difference comes in. if a wiz of any lvl was inside that 60' area they would NOT loose any stored Essence. but if they tried to cast a spell causing it to come outside the body then it would in a sense evaporate like water from a pond. the pond being the wiz's body. this would also be the case for an item.
outside the 60' but within the 100' would still be difficult for pretty much any lvl wiz because they'd have to fight just to keep the Essence in one place let alone cast a spell. I'm sure some1 like Fey could do it but it would be as difficult and as draining as say her doing the most difficult spell she knows. twice!
As of now I'm leaning toward him using magic of the elemental nature. basically the same fey lines Nikki uses but separated into the 5/6 elements. the thing is Kadis has no capacity to store Essence. instead he takes those elemental lines and forms the spell outside his body and even at a distance. so no running out of power but will be very tiring as it takes will power to force nature to do ANYTHING.
This is something that's hurting my brain. Kadis will be the 1st person to mutate INTO a were creature and will be able to pass it on through saliva or blood. the difference being there is an absolute presence that comes with it. 'The Cat' as he will refer to it. all instinct all the time. and it wants to be the dominant personality. not to do something evil or anything but because a cat is self relying and is it's own master. the host and cat will NEVER merge will never ENTIRELY agree on what they should be doing at any given time so there would be a constant battle of wills. that's why i need any info on the relationship between Nikki and unga-dunga as that's the closest character that has this same issue. Nikki is NOT an avatar but she has the spirit so to speak of Aunghadhail. I've read the wiki page on her but i still don't get it. lol maybe I'm just to tired.

Another thing to consider is how the field actually affect Essence itself. It's one thing to be able to block access to Essence (although it would have tobe immensely powerful to be able to block all access to all Essence... one thing might be to key the blocking ability to his Wiz rating, so that if he is a Wiz-2, then he can completely block access for a Wiz-2, but a Wiz-3 would be only mostly blocked, maybe down to the Wiz-1 level, while a Wiz-5 would have difficulty and maybe be equivalent to a Wiz-3 in the field).

A possible aspect to that is that the field blocks some types of Essence more than others, such as blocking non-Earth oriented magic greatly (such as demonic, divine, or Mythos) while more nature oriented magic (such as Fae magic) may be affected very little if at all. That would be both more limiting and much more powerful, since it would allow him to use his magic while denying others their own. Also, if it is affecting access to Essence directly, think about whether it primarily affects access to external sources as opposed to internal sources. You mentioned that an Unbreakable magic sword would stay Unbreakable, which sounds like effects generated from an internal source of magic would be unaffected by the field. What this would mean is that the reverse of the first paragraph would likely apply. That is, a Wiz-0 who is more used to storing and using smaller amounts of Essence and primarily draws on an internal source or storage would be a lot less hampered than a Wiz-5 who is used to being able to draw on all the Essence around themselves. This would actually work well if you were to use this character early on where he is learning to control his field. Otherwise, if he has an uncontrollable field such as you describe, it would quickly spread about his abilities, and all it would take would be a mage (such as the Necromancer) to hire someone to off him before he became even more of a threat. And even a Regen-6 can be killed, it just takes a lot more effort (look at Tennyo during the last sim they did, it wouldn't take much more firepower to overwhelm her completely and she's a Regen-7). That, and a villain wouldn't hesitate to use a nuke if that's what it would take to kill him. He would pose that much of a threat.

Blocking access to Essence would work well with the concept also in the aspect of being an Avatar. Imagine being a spirit in the area when he first manifests the aura. All of a sudden there are no sources of Essence available, and in the center of it all there is a Hallow. If you were a spirit powerful enough to not be immediately incapacitated by having your energy cut off, wouldn't you flee to the one spot that looked "tasty"? Which could explain why he has a powerful spirit inside him providing his power. Being a Paladin wouldn't work as well, since a Divine power would be extremely hesitant to put any power into someone who cut off access to that power source on an unconscious level. A straight up Avatar would work better.

On your Regen level, if the only reason to have regen that high was because of a major battle scene between a similar being, you might want to consider that some Ragers (like Bloodwolf and Razorback) have greatly increased healing rates while raging. Then you could de-power the Regen level to where you don't need the Regen rating (having Regen from either being an Avatar or from Ex or Shifter) and having a psychological weakness as well. Also keep in mind that being a Rager doesn't necessarily mean you are a mindless killing machine. Look at Eldritch's Rager rating. That's an example of a specifically triggered Rager syndrome. You could have a Rager who is triggered by overwhelming pain or wounds for instance.

Oh, and I don't remember the exact location of the reference, but it's been stated somewhere in one of the stories that Fey isn't actually an Avatar, nor are Carmilla or Tennyo. Exactly what they are hasn't been really categorized, but they don't have the spirit sense or spirit binding abilities that Avatars generally have (or any of them could have "captured" Jinn).

That would definitely be a case of doing it wrong, IMHO. There are very few times when people are able to write a gamebreaker well; and even less times it should be done.

I'm gonna have to be careful writing this character, I can see. The character is a Regen-7/Paragon combo; essentially unkillable, but sure as hell not unbeatable. Of course, the Paragon trait ups the ante a fair bit.

Yes, this will be a very hard character to write.

My thoughts were, originally, her Paragon trait would be limited to weilding guns; she would always know where and when to point the trigger to hit her target, but she would be useless without a gun.

Well, not useless, but less useful.

But if the Paragon trait can't be limited like that, I'm gonna have to revise the character. Maybe not drop the Paragon trait, but introduce psychological limitations.

Yes, I can see where this would work. If a villain-type person managed to get her while her Paragon trait wasn't active, then they easily could have got to her friend and kid.

Roaring Rampage of Revenge, anyone?

I'd already had this storyline in mind, anyway. This would have all happened earlier... But this isn't the place to discuss my character.

{Edit}- I like AnvilDude's idea, too. Her Paragon trait failed her when her kid got captured and killed earlier... That would make anyone think twice about relying on instincts, eh?}

Since they're Weres instead of mutants, they don't gete evaluated on the mutants scales. Paige happens to be both, which just complicated matters.
Bloodwolf isn't a true Were, but he's an Avatar with the spirit of the werewolf, which is *completely* different.
I like that idea of an anti-essence warper effect. Sounds like the closest thing to the original character that I can think of. But that also brings it's own set of limits. This character may simply be introducing or reintroducing acorrding to our own history a new/redefined Mage class called Druids. And this original character could use wiz magic Mage type magic Druid magic and divine magic. At high lvls for each. Really really high lvls. Not sure if I'll bring all that to this side but I'm not putting it aside either. And u very well could use magic to hurl a rock at him. At some point the magic would stop and natural law would take over aka momentum. And he could be a were-mutant or a were-avatar or a were-Imbued/paladin would depend on what I decide his final power set to be. Which I may leave up to the readers as I have fun writing each chapter at a time and incorperating reader suggestions and comments into he story/storyline

Sorry, I should have clarified. I meant a 'slot' type mimic like Counterpoint, not a 'doppelganger' type mimic like Duplex. Counterpoint and other mimics of his type can 'memorize' a power set and 'recall' it later, so they are not dependent on the powers of those around them. Counterpoint, for example, is known to keep a speedster slot, a PK brick slot, and others, and was also able to capture Chaka's power to use as well.

So, for example, this mimic would be able to devote a slot to perfect precognition, and another slot to time travel. And, another one to Energizer powers, and another one as a Deviser so that they can build their own gear and holdouts. The number of available slots would vary from character to character, but it shouldn't be unreasonable to expect at least four or five.

Most of their tricks are riffs off the same core concept (like Mobius) or all work on the same theme (the 'guy from the future' new admission during winter term).

Of course, the counter-counter argument to that would come from those that say that the Dev power is really a specific kind of WIZ power, so we're right back to where we started from.

Anyway, if this is for a fanfic character or something, the main question is 'How does THAT character's power work'. Not necessarily how Madison Jeffery's power work. Devisor, Wizard, limited PK, even Manifestor could all replicate those kinds of powers easily.

For some reason I thought the show featured more mature girls. Senior magical girls, maybe retired. Not sure why. Something I read back when it first came out.

I`ve only watched the first series. Enjoyed it well enough. Has a lot of the tropes.

Very young cute magical girl.

cute Animal side kick.

Large well endowed evil queen who can loom over the girls nicely.

I have always thought the evil queens were inspired by the forceful lady next door who was always giving kids grief for simply being kids.

But when they started to build a backstory with some actual plot it got more interesting.

I do not feel any great interest at the moment to watch the next series, but I have it on my computer and likely will at some point.

Nanoha was actually a magical girl show aimed at the secondary demographic instead of the primary one (young men instead of little girls), so you have to re-interpret stuff like Precia Testarossa's Absolute Cleavage.

The moment Nanoha had some competition for the Jewel Shards, the story improved. But it really took a massive leap forward with that first scene with Precia. That changed everything.

So you ought to watch season 2. It just keeps getting better. It also keeps moving farther and farther from 'cute magical girls' toward 'super robot wars'. And the villains in season 2 are *great*. And dangerous. And determined. Only drawback? Less Yuuno. Don't get committed to that Yuuno x Nanoha ship. (I'm on Team NanoFate. So sue me.)

Then watch season 3, which is 26 eps, with four new main characters. It is chock full of foreshadowing, plot twists, Wham Moments, Crowning Moments of Awesome, and battles royales. Plus Nanoha's greatest CMoA ever, in ep 25. As a hint, the cold open (which apparently has little to do with the story) has no less than four important foreshadowing/plot-twist points in it.

Man I hate this phone. Those r all great observations. The anti magic zone would work as such. Fey for example, while inside his field would be unable to gather essence and any already stored would evaporate for lack of better terms once it was brought outside her body. So magic items and spells would work the same way. A sword made unbreakable would remain as long as it wasn't an active spell that required OUTSIDE essence to be drawn in in order to work. As far as the fireball as soon as it entered his zone the magic holding it together would disapate so it would just disolve into nothing. Now an item would return to normal so to speak once it was outside the zone and return to drawing in essence to restore the effect. Basicly ANY item or spell that activly required essence to be brought in would be no longer work

"We know what you're thinking."

As for Paragons, espers don't usually have ratings denoting power, only a 1-3 scale for control. I suppose there could be enough Paragons around to make a scale, though. Also, some sort of psychological limitation that only lets you use your power on certain subjects seems perfectly plausible.

But as you said yourself we don't have a lot of information, so you can pretty much do as you want.

Sorry, but that infamous 1-3 rating was used to describe a rating on Espers developed a century ago. Espers do have a regular 1-7 rating. However, it's really hard to peg a given Esper talent at a particular level. Dr. Filbert Quintain has done extensive work in quantifying these things, and as a result there are guidelines, but they're incredibly complex rule systems involving things like reliability, ability to use the power under stress, distance from target, etc.

Paragon ratings tend to use these kinds of metrics and a whole lot more. Just pretend it's really complex, and blame Dr. Quintain for it. The weird thing is that most powers testing wonks around the globe *like* the Quintain Rules.

For a weird one like that, I'd prefer a mid-level WIZ trait, limited. It's more elegant than a bundle of inter-related limited powers. "Anything he can conceive of" sounds like an intuitive factor to me, and for intuitive powers, I prefer magic. Rather than trying to find a combination of PK and ESP and DEV that comprehensively covers the Box powers without creating a tiny god, I would use a character whose WIZ trait came with an instinctive knowledge of one or two spells that he can use without preparation, incantation or gestures. He only knows a couple of spells, but he knows them SO WELL that they don't look like magic.
