Wasn't that in one of the Merlin High stories?

Although I DO feel sorry for Vanessa in the latest Call of Thunder, Being right next to Tempest when she pulled that sorry bit of Blabbering.

Yes.

Well, Vox is always going to be the one in that spot. Vanessa and Sharisha are two of the few black girls on campus, unless you go with the Tigers. Whateley is pretty white. And Vanessa is determined not to be some rich whitey's arm candy. She wants to be a success in her own right. She wants to be Oprah Winfrey, not Robin Givens. That's why she spends so much times with her own friends and not hanging on Phase like some lovesick teenager. So that means *more* time with her homegirl Sharisha.

And Sharisha can't let it go. It is so fucking NOT FAIR that these goddamn BOYS are like a hundred times hotter than she is and they're GUYS! Ayla still has a goddamn dick! This is just eating at poor Sharisha like a cancer. Vanessa has appointed herself as the person who's going to help Sharisha get over this.

Maybe an incident near Workshop or Magic Lab will turn her into a HOT GUY and we'll see what she bitches about then. Very Happy

I thought part of it was she was also stuck with Tempest as her roommate as well.

They chose to be roommates. They actually get along really well, even though the 'arguing about Ayla' thing is officially off-limits in the room. They have a lot in common. They'll probably choose to room together next year too.

And no one forces you to spend time with your roommate (ecept when you're both in the room, like at bedtime). Vox and Tempest *choose* to spend time together. The fact that Tempest has some personality problems doesn't make Vox like her less. That's not how most of us choose our friends. (And the fact that Vox *likes* Phase doesn't make Tempest like Vox any less.)

So, Diane, I'm curious: did you create Vox? If you did, what inspired you to do so?

Did I create Vox? Nope. I think Bek did. (Since Bek has created roughly 97,438.2 Whateley Universe characters, it's a safe guess. Very Happy) I came along *years* after the Whateley Universe was formed in what passes for a Big Bang in writing circles. And Vox was sort of mentioned as a possible girlfriend for Phase, even though nothing had been done about it. So I ran wild with the concept.

I did the same thing with Anna and Rhiannon, and Blot, and Golden Girl, and Prism, and everyone else who was already in the Whateley Bible and wasn't carefully protected under several layers of plastic wrap. OTOH, everyone in the Good Ol' Boyz, and most of the Golden Kids were my hair-brained schemes. (Tabby and Glitch were already in place.)

BTW, Vox gets more air-time in Ayla #7, which starts off the Winter Term right after Jade 9.

Hmmm. Just ran a search (man, these desktop search programs are da bomb!) and the earliest (actually, only) pre-Diane mention of Vox is Jade 6, chapter 47 (Thanksgiving Day), which was released back in June 9, 2006 (and Babs grumbled that she had submitted it three months before). I can't remember when exactly Diane was admitted into the canon, but I don't think it was THAT back that Babs based that scene on Diane's take on Vox. Some details are already defined in that story -- we are told that Vox is black and her real name is Vanessa. But that's about it.

So, even if Vox wasn't created by Diane, she was woefully underused before Diane took over Ayla. You might say that Bek created Vox, but Diane fleshed her out.

But Bek created an entire character. Maybe we only saw the name and skin color (and Babs submitted that story a year and a half before I joined the Cabal), but Bek wrote up a LOT more on her. I only changed a few things.

But the complete absence of Vox from any other stories, or any mentions at meals, forced me to retcon that behavior into the Ayla stories once I decided Ayla had a hot girlfriend.

Actually, a number of traits seen in published stories forced me to do a lot of 'writing around problems'. Like 'why is Ayla not in 6th period aikido with the others?' Or 'why is she in some of the Costume Class scenes and not in others?' I literally re-read the entire Canon and made notes on every stinking mention or not-mention I could find, then used that - in part - to define MY version of Ayla and his/her life. Being obsessive-compulsive, I enjoyed it.

To tide you over, read the Ayla and the Shoulder Angels. The Siren class looks to be promising and Vanessa looks to make some new friends.

Actually, I'm already working on one. It's quite a way off (in Whateley time) though.

OTOH, I'm also working on over half a dozen Whateley *summer* stories, so you have to expect that not all of them will ever get off the ground.

Just wanted to pop in to say that I really liked the Siren section of Ayla 7 -- 2. There are a lot of neat applications for their variant of TK, and I loved Ligeia's trick with selective destruction and Chorale's trick with a protective cage of air.

Really cool. Any hints about what other techniques we might see?
