So, Diane, I'm curious: did you create Vox? If you did, what inspired you to do so?

Did I create Vox? Nope. I think Bek did. (Since Bek has created roughly 97,438.2 Whateley Universe characters, it's a safe guess. ) I came along *years* after the Whateley Universe was formed in what passes for a Big Bang in writing circles. And Vox was sort of mentioned as a possible girlfriend for Phase, even though nothing had been done about it. So I ran wild with the concept.
I did the same thing with Anna and Rhiannon, and Blot, and Golden Girl, and Prism, and everyone else who was already in the Whateley Bible and wasn't carefully protected under several layers of plastic wrap. OTOH, everyone in the Good Ol' Boyz, and most of the Golden Kids were my hair-brained schemes. (Tabby and Glitch were already in place.)
BTW, Vox gets more air-time in Ayla #7, which starts off the Winter Term right after Jade 9.

Hmmm. Just ran a search (man, these desktop search programs are da bomb!) and the earliest (actually, only) pre-Diane mention of Vox is Jade 6, chapter 47 (Thanksgiving Day), which was released back in June 9, 2006 (and Babs grumbled that she had submitted it three months before). I can't remember when exactly Diane was admitted into the canon, but I don't think it was THAT back that Babs based that scene on Diane's take on Vox. Some details are already defined in that story -- we are told that Vox is black and her real name is Vanessa. But that's about it.
So, even if Vox wasn't created by Diane, she was woefully underused before Diane took over Ayla. You might say that Bek created Vox, but Diane fleshed her out.
Don't call me Shirley. You will surely make me surly.

But Bek created an entire character. Maybe we only saw the name and skin color (and Babs submitted that story a year and a half before I joined the Cabal), but Bek wrote up a LOT more on her. I only changed a few things.
But the complete absence of Vox from any other stories, or any mentions at meals, forced me to retcon that behavior into the Ayla stories once I decided Ayla had a hot girlfriend.
Actually, a number of traits seen in published stories forced me to do a lot of 'writing around problems'. Like 'why is Ayla not in 6th period aikido with the others?' Or 'why is she in some of the Costume Class scenes and not in others?' I literally re-read the entire Canon and made notes on every stinking mention or not-mention I could find, then used that - in part - to define MY version of Ayla and his/her life. Being obsessive-compulsive, I enjoyed it.

Just wanted to pop in to say that I really liked the Siren section of Ayla 7 -- 2. There are a lot of neat applications for their variant of TK, and I loved Ligeia's trick with selective destruction and Chorale's trick with a protective cage of air.
Really cool. Any hints about what other techniques we might see?
