Cool, there were recent queries about IRC roleplay and those of us not involved were clueless in how to respond, other than directing to this sub-forum.

Did follow the link and login, seems like a nice bunch. And took a bit to realize that the medley being referred to was Tensai, like failed my obvious knowledge role big time!

So, if I want to join, do I make a character on here, or in the IRC chat room?

@psy-chic: I'd say go to the IRC chat room and ask questions, hopefully someone will walk you through the process for getting involved in soft RP while they await Tensai's magnum opus.

@Tensai: So, not running strictly from Mutants & Masterminds at the moment, is it still derivative, and if so which edition is the basis, seeing as both 2nd and 3rd editions are available from the publishers' site? Would it be worth someone's while to obtain the rule books, especially given reasonably priced PDFs?

At the moment, we don't really have any kind of mechanics-based roleplay going on right now; it's all freeform storytelling. Most of the campaign and statted character stuff you see here has kind of fallen by the wayside as of recently.

The hard RP conversion stuff we're working on is very heavily based on M&M 2nd Ed., specifically the core book and the Ultimate Power expansion. Most of the modifications we're making don't change the core mechanics at all. The majority of the notes we're making on mechanics deal with (a) limiting powers to what is reasonable within the universe itself, (b) figure out potential loopholes in the rules and determine fixes, as well as (c) work out standby conflict resolution options in the event a GM isn't around.

Most of the format for these house rules is probably going to be along the lines of 'For the power 'Blah', the following modifications apply...', which means you'll probably need the books in order to see the original power that we've made the changes to.

Not like it isn't easy to find, but for Our Readers interested in obtaining the books just mentioned, here's the link!

And now's the time to buy those hardcopy editions; they're pricing some of them way low to clear out their physical inventory, half the cost of the PDFs, get them before they're gone! The one's they aren't pricing to move, the PDFs are half the cost, but two of the core books are being liquidated.

Well, I've got more reading materials now. Mutants & Masterminds 2nd edition RPG, and Mastermind's Manual. Kind of silly when I'm not planing on joining in, but I'm a category 1 biblioholic.

That's Ultimate Power, not the Mastermind's Manual. Two different books.

Hmm. I'm looking at it on my bookshelf, yep, I bought Mutants & Masterminds, and the Mastermind's Manual. You may not be using the Mastermind's Manual, but it was on sale, OK?

But from your post I gather that you are using Ultimate Power. Which is out of stock in hardcopy, $10.00 PDF.

Any others one should be aware of?

Nope; the only two we're using are the core rulebook and Ultimate Power. I simply wasn't sure if you were getting the Mastermind's manual out of a misunderstanding or simply interest about the system.

I'd gone into shopping mode, it was on sale. And it had slipped my mind that you'd listed the two books you were using.

I like how Green Ronin is making their rulebooks available as PDFs, it makes their inventory control much easier, and enables keeping the various editions in print. And given a duplexing color laser printer, such as I have, one can create hardcopy from the PDF.

I tried online RPGs once. It was a mistake.

oh hum, Im going to RP a starting hero. oh, the DM allows two of the 6 guys the campaign started with to be fallen angels/gods/demons/super saiyan/etc... and two pages in it's Dragon Ball between them for the rest of the campaign? nope.avi

and thats not just one time. its every time. someone's always a goddamn retard who wants to be the good bad guy with a codex of back story and has some sort of otherworld bond (i.e. celestial/daemonic/elemental), and if it's not about them they're going to make it that way. and the GM is a push over and lets them because they don't know how to GM.

Those characters get gently pushed into the side channels, where they can do their own thing without bugging any of the people who have concerns like balance and sanity and fitting the setting Smile Tensai's not that kind of GM anyway.

And I'm tempted to say that if every game you join has a dribbling retard in it, the connection is fairly obvious.

The cognitive gap between myself and the average role player does make them seem retarded sometimes, but presumably they are just average.

It's good you see how much smarter I am than most people. I didn't expect anyone else to pick up on that.

I can relate to this, not just in role playing, but everywhere.

Yes, there is a cognitive gap. Only not in the direction you think.
