Well, with how odd this failure is After today about the only think I'll not have replaced will be the system memory. Still if I do figure out what went wrong and buy a spare replacement I may have to look into investing in an over-sized USB hard drive to hold all the important stuff.

Speaking of acting crazy, I got caught by the latest MS wild hair. One of the automatic downloads picked up a security fix for Outlook. The first thing the fix did was sever the internet connection when it detected my Zone Alarm. Took me over a week to get the desktop squared away and back on line. Now all I have to do is figure out why the desktop is so slow on several things. If its not one thing, its another.

Also be careful a power problem can blow board and CPU. A bad board can fry a CPU. this is what I meant by cascade failure.

Any good news on the system battlefield?

I know what it's like to have a system go down, and have to wait to get parts/software to make it functional again.

Very frustrating.

Misty : “It’s not going to be like this every day, is it?”
“Lord, no,” Jadis replied. “Sometimes, it gets weird.”

Hank Declan shook his head, disbelieving. "Tell me I did not just see them roshambo for victory."

Well, there was a minor breakdown in communication between me and Crucial. I was expecting them to just roll over the shipping date to Monday rather than having to contact me. But they contacted me through email. Which I missed. I have had this email address for going on ten years now. So it gets slammed with spam but it's my public address. I have a very good spam filter program on my main computer which is down to take care of it usually. So right now I'm faced with filtering by hand and I missed it.

Anyway I contacted them directly later in the afternoon today and there was a chance that the memory wouldn't ship today. BUT it did their system waited till almost midnight to let me know though. If all goes well, I should have the memory around 2 pm my time. Then if luck smiles on me, everything will work. I can get back to writing and updating the site. I also have some work to catch up with so I can pay my bills and such.

As I've told others. It's "sorta" fixed. It's running but not at 100%. In this case the mb is reporting that some of the voltages are screwed up.

+12 v is reading 0 V
-12 v is reading -16.97
+3.3 v is reading 0.0
+5 v is reading 4.78 (in normal limits)
-5 v is reading -8.78

and my core voltage appear low. so the system is clunky. I'm surprised it's working at all. If I plug too much stuff into it like my printer or external hard drive the computer will reset and fail to post.

I have another PS on the way according to tracking it should arrive Monday.

You might also want to consider a power supply. Those seem to have the highest failure rate. Even higher than hard disks.

Looks like Ras had it right, Be careful. Also see what parts still work with good power.

well it seems to have been a combination of things. or it was a cascade failure that finally got to the point I couldn't boot.

Well, I think it's as fixed as it's going to get. Even with a new power supply in the system cranking out 1000 watts, it still claims the 12 volt input is low.

Everything is working though. I also found that I needed to reboot my printer because every time I plugged it in, the computer wouldn't boot. The reboot fixed that.

I'm not running a 3 ghz system with 4 gigs of ram around one and a half terabytes of drive space.

At this point I'd get a voltmeter and check the voltages. A cheap digital voltmeter should be affordable enough.

Maybe the built-in voltmeter on your mainboard is broken. On the other hand, anything that can actually drag the 12 V output of a 1000 W powersupply down would have me worried.

Good luck cleaning out the rest of the bugs.

P.S.:Edited this message for grammar.
