Sean was your average twenty six year old. Short with thin brown hair we was unremarkable. Always dreaming of adventures he wandered around with his head half in the cloud which was one reason for his horrible luck with reality. Currently he was driving his old Saturn to a brand new job his first in five years.
"Oh man finally things are starting to look up. After five horrible years I finally got my head on straight and a new job. I think everything will be great as long as I impress my boss the it's all aces."
So involved with his fantasy he didn't notice the light up ahead turn red. Barreling through the intersection he didn't notice the truck until it struck his driver's side door. The last thing he said before he left this world was as appropriately average as he was.
"Well crap!"
Sean was screaming. He found himself in what must have been hell. As soon as he arrived he was assaulted with colors and sounds too intense for his mind to handle. Freezing, burning and electrocution all seemed to happen at the same time. He felt himself being pushed and pulled in a thousand different directions. Without a body he felt what must have been his soul boil and warp in incredibly painful ways. Just when he thought we would go mad a voice cut through his fog of pain.
" Well, well what do we have here? It has been so very long since I've had a visitor and a human no less. I could just leave you and watch you go mad, but that would only be fun for a little while. I know, you will entertain me human. You see this place is a prison for me. Both in form and location. But I can send things out of here. First let me fix that horrible mortal frame. If left to your own devices a simple bomb or a handful of centuries would kill you. No now that I have thought of it you will entertain me for a long, long time little one. Now Go and be sure to have fun. Oh and a final gift from me, for being such a good sport about all of this."
The last thing Sean heard before darkness claimed him was the dark laughter of a strange god.

Pain, that was the first thing Sean felt when he woke. Groaning he rolled over and sat up.
"Oh wow what a horrible dream.."
Taking a look around all he saw were trees. Confused because the last thing he remember was the car crash.
"Holy dammit! The car crash. How the hell did I survive? Wait the truck hit me. Then... pain. I remember now. I died, then lots of pain. A voice said something about entertainment, improvement, show a gift?.Ah the forget it. All I want to know is how I got here?"
Standing up and almost falling over Sean realized something was very, very, wrong. He gazed down at his hands. Unfamiliar hands. They had none of the usual scars or the short chewed nails that he remembered. They were also much longer and slimmer than before. Looking down at his body his vision was interrupted by two large breasts. Letting out a very unmanly shriek.
" I'm a Girl! I'm a girl? This is bullshit! People do not change genders like that. This is completely unacceptable, I won't accept this. I don't have time for this shit. That thingy brought me here and did this. I'll bet it can fix me. But where the hell would it be. I found it by being hit by a truck and dieing. Plus wherever it was hurt, a lot. I don't fancy dieing just to get my magical sex change reversed, but if that's what it takes then I'll head for the nearest highway."
Giving himself "Cause I'm still a guy dammit. Man, I feel for Ranma Saotome right now." a very though examination to make sure there were no more surprises. He found that he was physically he was fully female. A fact which irritated him to no end. His arms and legs were much longer, giving him about an extra foot of height. Pulling on his hair he found it much longer, and blue.
"Arrgh! To make it worse I have blue hair. Blue Hair. To be fair I always thought it was sexy in anime but not in real life. The fact that I'm tall almost makes up for the gender bending."
Staggering to his feet. With an additional foot of height and much longer legs his center of gravity and stride were completely different. After a bit of practice he seemed to get the hang of walking in his new body. Thirst made itself know about then so he went off is search of a creek. Stumbling for half an hour through the underbrush he finally came across a small creek. Not even twelve feet across, it nonetheless was clear and clean looking. Leaning over Sean caught a view of his new body. Tall, Sean guessed that he would be a little over six foot, which was pretty intimidating on a woman. His body was long and lean with not a bit of excess fat on it a far cry from his old one. The face was oval with thin pink lips below a cute pert nose which itself sat between to bright green eyes. His skin was smooth and pale. The hair was a bright unnatural blue like a noon sky. Opening his mouth he almost screamed again. Instead of the normal teeth you would expect his mouth was full of triangular teeth that wouldn't look out of place on a shark. Closing his mouth he watched as the teeth formed a solid wall of shiny white tooth. Using his tongue he found that he still had molars, he even had his wisdom teeth back. They were all perfectly straight and interlocking. With nothing to help it he closed his mouth. Sulking dejectedly Sean had seen his dream woman and it was his reflection. He dunked his head beneath the stream greedily swallowing the cool water. Refreshed he brought his head up only to freeze. Not ten feet from him was a large black wolf. And it looked very hungry.
"Nice wolf, good wolf. You don't want to eat me do you. You don't know where I've been, hell I don't know where I've been. You could get sick you know."
Seeing the wolf slowly approach Sean looked desperately for a rock, a stick, or something. It was too late though. The wolf lept and Sean through one arm up to protect his face and the other to try and ward the wolf away. Several moments passed before he opened his eyes, having expected to feel the pain of a wolf biting him. Instead he was greeted with an amazing sight. His arm that he was using to keep the wolf away had grown and stretched. Purple and scaled it ended in a sharp tentacle that had pieced the wolf's chest, killing it instantly. Even as he watched the arm stretched and returned to normal. Well except for the blood covering his hand and forearm.
"Holy hell! How did I do that? It was like my arm stretched and transformed. Could I do that again?"
Immediately setting out to replicate the event. He began focusing on his arms. Willing them to grow claws he watched in delight as they responded to his command. Ten thick black claws shot out from under his fingertips with a slight tingle. Testing them on a nearby tree, he confirmed that they were indeed as sharp as he thought. Swiftly flowing through several shapes he watched as his flesh flowed to his command.
"This is so cool. If I can do this with my whole body then I could be myself again."
Setting out to do just that. He stood in front of the stream watching his reflection. Focusing on his memories he tried to recapture his old look. Nothing happened. Frustrated he thought of several other people he had known. A faint tingle rippled through his body as it flowed into each form. His father, old girlfriends, old classmates, his younger brother, ex fiancee, even both of his dogs. Finally stopping back on his new form. He let out a frustrated yell.
"Why can't I change into myself. I can do my family even a few old girlfriends. I can do the freaking dogs! So why can't I do me?"
Dropping with a sigh he sat and kicked his legs in the creek. For what seemed like hours Sean sat there going over what had happened to him. After an hour he had an epiphany.
"That's right. That thing that I was stuck with said it improved me. Are these the improvements? If so I wonder if I can get a refund. Also he said something about a final gift. I wonder what it meant by a final gift?"
At that, a heavy object struck him on the head. Wincing he grabbed it. The object turned out to be a thick leather bound book. Opening it Sean found a foreword by R.O.B. He began to read with a increasingly pale face.
"So Sean if you are reading this then you had to wonder what my last 'gift' was. Well this is it. Now I know you are wondering where you are and what happened so I'll give you a few freebies seeing your a newbie. First I improved you. Mostly so that you won't die easily and so soon after our wonderful meeting. I fixed up that horrid shell you call a body, I pulled out all the stops, full potential unlocked. That means you would have the highest ability across the board, strength, speed, intelligence all that good stuff. Then I increased it twelve fold. Why, cause a regular human, even the strongest or smartest is pretty boring. Plus they die after a few years. So take heart you should be entertaining me for millenia, assuming you survive. Secondly I rifled through that primitive think box you call a central intelligence organ, you have so many interesting stories and ideas in your head Sean. One caught my eye. I believe the name 'Envy' will give you a hint to the least of what you can do. I left a bunch of other things in there but they have to be either unlocked or figured out yourself. Also none of this is reversible, even if I wanted to I wouldn't change it. Watching you stumble around with your new looks and ability is half the fun. Finally your situation while rare is by no means unique. There are an infinite number of others like me who have done similar things to people like you. Lost and trapped in between worlds, they were taken and improved. All of them want to kill you. So watch out for them, they could be anyone anywhere or anywhen. I hope you find a way off the primitive ball of dirt I dropped you on. Being stuck on one hunk of rock forever would be really boring 'hint hint' Sincerely R.O.B. P.S. The book is magic, so figure it out genius.
With a roar of rage Sean turned an punched a nearby tree. It splintered under his strength.
"God Dammit! It's permanent. That means I'm stuck like this. Aarrhhgg! Freaking superpowers but I have to be a girl."
Smashing several trees Sean worked his anger out on them. A few deep breaths later and he was visible calmer.
"Okay downside, I'm stuck like this, on a strange world that may or may not be like the one I was from. Also a whole lot of similar people are after my head. The upside is that I have superpowers. I am super strong, tough, smart and all that jazz. Plus I am a shape shifter of unknown but apparently high power. Plus additional but unspecified abilities that could show up in time. And this book of 'magic'. So that just about evens things out. I am still me even if I'm a girl and that is what's important. I guess I really am stuck as a girl. I guess it could be worse. I could have just be dead, or a ugly girl without superpowers. In fact that I'm alive at all is a ridiculous stroke of luck, so I shouldn't bitch too much. I still need food, clothes and I need to figure out where I am. So first food. That wolf should be tasty, hell I'll eat it raw if I have to."
Watching as the book disappeared in a 'pop' he frowned. Focusing the book popped back into existence. Satisfied that he knew how to at least find and store the book he turned his attention towards food. Grabbing the wolf she 'Cause she had to face facts" drug it over to the patch of dirt she had woken on. Concentrating she formed a single sharp blade out of her right hand. Grabbing the wolf she began to slice. Frowning at how it jiggle in her grip, she was struck with an idea. Two boneless tentacles flowed from her back over her shoulders. An extra pair of hands formed at then ends where they grabbed the wolf and between the three hands managed to hold it steady. Smiling at her success she proceeded to raggedly skin the wolf, barely managing to keep the skin mostly intact. Turning to the raw carcass she was a bit worried that instead of disgust or anything the sight simply made her hungry. Without a means to make a fire she debated the merits of eating it raw or going hungry. Old habits won out and she ripped a leg off the body. Biting into it she was almost overwhelmed by the taste. Instead of being horrible she loved it. And that worried her. Proceeding to eat the rest of the wolf save a few organs she fell back against the dirt. Laying there wondering exactly what else had been changed.
" But I need to find someplace to sleep. Instead of worrying about what if 's and stuff."
Getting up she began to walk when she heard the 'crack' of a twig. Going still she called out.
"Who's there?"
Instead of a verbal response all she got was a dart to the neck. As she collapsed to the ground, numb the last thing she heard was a voice.
"Objective secured."

"These people call me a monster. Well I'll show them. Hehehehe! They made me practice shifting for their 'experiments' well they'll get a nasty surprise today."
Fighting to keep a cruel smile off her face. Sean paced the small cell that had been her home for the last month. She had found herself here after being hit with a knockout dart or something. The food was terrible and they hurt her called her a monster. Under the pretense of experimentation they forced her to shift into different things. They tested her strength and speed, how fast she healed, which turned out to be 'very. That allowed them to perform more invasive surgeries. Ripping pieces off her to see if she could control them, she could but didn't show them that. She could change the separated pieces though. Waiting for her chance she knew she would have to go today. This place was driving her crazy so she would leave but not before killing everyone in the building. It was time.
"Subject twelve remain where you are."
Sean stilled, she learned the hard way not to disobey the voice on the intercom or so they thought anyway. A thick white mist sprayed from the ceiling vents. As it descend Sean shifted her lungs away and sealed the pores on her skin. Laying there seaming unconscious the door opened. Three white clad scientist wheeled in a thick steel gurney. They were followed by four guards clad in blue uniforms. Each guard had a rifle and a large knife strapped to their thighs. The scientist lifted her loose form up and locked her into the gurney. As they wheeled her out she tensed. "This is it!" As soon as the gurney was out and the rooms door shut she acted. Quickly shifting her form out of the locks she swelled even as the guards shot her. Where a six odd foot woman once was was a large purple and gray mass of writhing flesh. Tentacles and mouths lashed out. Lifting up the scientists they got a few desperate screams before they fell into one of her mouths. Wailing out of several dozen mouths she advanced on the guards. Their bullets a mild annoyance she swept up the closest and brought him down on the floor with a wet 'smack'. The others screamed into their radio's for backup but she was having none of that. Several more purple tentacles lashed out dragging the remaining guards into her mouths. Collapsing back into herself she staggered.
"Woah! That was a trip and a half. Plus I feel oddly full."
Chuckling at her joke she advanced towards the elevator that dominated the far end of the hallway. Noticing the doors that lined each side she causally broke them by wrenching off their hinges. Giving a yell.
"If you want out now's your chance. I ain't staying to help you so do whatever!"
Reaching the elevator she made for the top. Marveling at the lack of security she did her best not to laugh at the generic elevator music that played the whole time. Stepping off onto the top floor she turned and smashed the controls ensuring that anyone that wanted to leave would have to go by her. Idly smashing a fleeing secretary into a wall the body left a dark smear of blood as it fell to the floor. A crazy idea came to her a song from an anime she saw a literal lifetime ago and she began to sing.
"Total slaughter. Total slaughter. I won't leave a single man alive. La di da de di. Genocide. La di da de dud. An ocean of blood."
Laughing at the faces of the people who heard her she moved forward killing everyone with quick economical stabs and the occasional twist. Fingertips darting out like bullets to hit those who kept their distance. She had one goal the central security station. That was where they kept records of all the video feeds. If she busted that then as long as no one was alive she would be completely home free in a manner of speaking. The number of people had dwindled to a bare trickle. Entering the main lab she found the man in charge of the operations. Dr. Hamish Walt. A large bear of a man. He looked closer to what you would expect of a professional wrestler than a scientist. He put on a brave face when she appeared but Sean could tell he was scared.
"Hello doctor, I'm a big fan of your work. You know the whole kidnapping confused people who are just trying to figure out what crazy alternate dimension they happen to be stuck in, and brutally cutting them up, all those wonderful things. They hurt you know, in fact this past month has been the second most painful experience in either of my lives second only to ' that place' but really everything would be second to that place so don't feel bad. You hurt the big bad monster. Aren't you happy?"
Screwing up his face in rage Walt bellowed.
"NNNOOO! I won't be happy till every last one of you monsters is dead! Dead do you hear me. Look at all the people you killed, what about them? Huh what about them"
"Oh what about them. You can't be all like your a monster and then try and guilt trip me. I never said that I wasn't a monster. But now that you mention it, I wasn't one not until you had your jack booted thugs drug me and lock me up to be experimented on. I mean really what do you expect. You're a squishy human and I am totally awesome. I just fought through like thirty guys with assault rifles and I don't have a scratch on me, how cool is that. But none of that is important. The real issue is that you hurt me. You Hurt ME! No one hurts me. I learned early in life that you can be nice to people until they try and put their hands on you then it's fightin time. I don't care if you think you had a good reason. I won you lost. So I think you should just man up and die."
As she spoke her right arm began to swell, stretching and morphing into a horrific giant arm. It resembled a hideous cross between man insect and reptile. Plus the whole thing was colored a sickening greenish purple. Part of her right torso morphed with it giving her a crazy half formed look. Giving a quick smile to the blubbering scientist she brought the arm down. Walt didn't 'splat' he and the wall behind him ceased to exist. A huge gouge was ripped through the lab down at least three levels. Surprised by the level of destruction Sean began to laugh.
"AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! This is great! I can't believe that I spent an entire lifetime without this. I can hardly imagine myself without it now. Hehehe. Now lets finish off any survivors, find the security footage and hopefully I can find some clothes."
Steeping around the gouge Sean searched for the security room. After almost ten minutes of wandering with the occasional survivor dealt with she smacked herself.
"Duh! The freaking floor signs. Good lord I'd thought I'd left this kind of idiocy behind me."
With that mystery solved she quickly made her way to the security room. Entering a bullet took her strait to the head. Toppling backwards she landed with a boneless 'thump'. A balding overweight guard peeked out from behind a bank of monitors.
"Ha I got the bitch! She didn't seem so touch. I'll bet she caught everyone by surprise."
So busy congratulating himself he didn't notice Sean's 'corpse' move. Slowly standing up behind the oblivious guard she crept up and spoke softly.
"Boo!"
"Ahhggrrr!"
His surprised yell fading into a pained grimace he winced and clutched at his heart. Red faced he wheezed. Falling over on his side he twitched once and went still, a victim of a heart attack. Surprised herself she could help saying.
"Wow I didn't think I was that scary?"
Shrugging she began looking for the main memory bank for the small security system. Frustrated by her inability to find it she decided to simple smash everything. With that finished, she turned towards the next objective. Clothes. Searching through several levels eventually revealed a par of blue pants a black shirt and black boots that all fit her fairly well. Several wallets and purses yealed almost nine hundred dollars. Finished she made her way out of the ruined lab and into more forests.
"Aaaahh what's with the forests, oh there we go."
Walking around the entrance revealed a parking lot full of cars. Searching through several sets of keys she finally found a correct set to a black sports car. Settling herself inside, she started the car and pulled out of the lot. Following the only road resulted in a boring scenic rout to the small town that began beyond the forest. Reading the sign. 'Bismark Illinois'.
"So that's where I am. I wonder what do I do now? I have no idea what is going on. Hell for all I know I'm in some crazy world where the Confederacy won or something. Well I guess there's no helping it."
Pulling over at the gas station. She stepped inside. The worker was a pimple scrawny brunette. Who at seeing her exclaimed.
"Wow a mutant!"
"what did you just call me?" was her response
"You know a mutant like in the comics. Are you part of a group?"
"A group of what superheros?"
"Yeah or villains whatever."
"No I need directions on a place I can go to learn about my powers or something. Do you know anyplace like that, or know someone who does?"
"Yeah old man Max. He is some kind a psychic or something, pretty popular, helps find stuff. He told me a while back about some school he went to when he was a kid Whaffel's or something like that. If you want to talk to him head down the man drag to the purple house out on the other side of town. Five minutes tops and you can't miss it."
"Thanks kid I appreciate it." Sean replied after committing the simple directions to memory.
"No problem mam."
With a wave she got back into her stolen car and headed down the main street to the purple house to talk to this Max about Whaffle's.

Driving down the main drag took about five minutes, exactly as said. Sean notice the house right away. It was pretty hard to miss a house painted purple in a neighborhood of white's and other more common colors. Pulling into the driveway she got out of the car. Making her way up the creaky set of wooden stairs she knocked on the door. For several minutes nothing happened. Just when she was about to knock again the door slid open a crack. Poking out from the crack was a bright blue eye and the barrel of a rather large pistol. A gruff voice issued from the opening.
"Who the hell are you. So kinda freaky experiment. Don't think I don't know what goes on in them woods. I don't trust anyone I can't read, and you missy are a big ol blank spot. So make with the splainin or I'll blast you!"
Backing away from the porch Sean held up her hands.
"Whoa, old man. You're Max right? I'm looking for a bit of explanation. I stopped by the gas station at the other end of town and the guy there told me you could tell me about mutants and so place called Whaffle's. Plus if you let me in I'll explain it better without a gun in my face. They hurt you know? Besides if you're worried about that 'place in the woods' well I was a guest not too long ago. So could you please let me explain inside away from where any yahoo could just come along?"
The old man gave her the stink eye before the gun fell away. The door slammed and she heard several locks and bolts rattle. The door swung open and he gestured her inside. Max was a short old man with a wild shock of hair like Emmet Brown with unusually bright blue eyes. The house was much like any other house, fairly clean with various pictures of what must have been family or friends on the wall's and tables. Following him into the living room Sean sat on the offered sofa. The old man took a chair opposite her.
"Well girlie you're right I'm Max, you wanted to talk so make with the explaining." He gave her the eye and kept his hand on the gun as he did so.
"Well it started about a month ago. I died."
Seeing the look on his face she elaborated.
"I was driving in my car to a new job, my first in almost five years. I didn't notice the truck until it smashed into my drivers side. Everything went dark. I found myself in hell or somewhere extremely hostile to humans. Imagine every possible sensation pushed beyond the impossible. And I don't mean that in so kinda cool way. It was literally impossible for colors to be that bright sounds that loud, heat, cold to be that intense. The colors were like daggers to my eyes. The sounds knifes right in my ears. You get the idea. I don't know how long I was there. It could have been seconds or maybe years, all I knew was pain. Until a voice spoke. Right I know cliche but it was like the voice of God or the Devil. I don't think. The thing was bored, it told me that it had been imprisoned a long time ago. It looked at me and knew everything. It also found me entertaining, so it decided to 'improve me'. All of what I can do are the results of his improvements. He wanted entertainment and he was going to get it. It told me that things like this had happened to people before, and that others like him had done similar things to other people and they all wanted to kill each other. Then he sent me here."
Before she could continue Max interrupted.
"So what yer sayin is that you 'died" went to Hell or something, and whoever's in charge basicly gave you superpowers and told you to be entertaining. And warned you about rivals. Am I about right?"
"Well yeah that pretty much covers it."
"That's some craziness you're spouted girl, but really I can't tell if you're lieing or not You at least think that is what happened so I can't rightly say you're lying, but it is pretty hard to swallow."
"More than a world full of mutants and groups that kidnap and experiment on them, at least outside of Marvel Comics?"
"I'll give you that one, girlie, now you said something about the place in the mountains?'
"Well after I woke up in a forest, I don't know if it was nearby or not but I think it was with how fast they found me. They caught me by surprise. I was still pretty shocked to be alive and looking so different. They got me with some kind of dart or something because I was out like a light. When I came to I was in a little white cell like you see on all those prison shows. A cot, a toilet and a sink. The voice on the intercom called me Subject Twelve. At first it wasn't to bad. They had seen me change my arms and stuff so they had me do more and more complex things. Changing my whole body, shrinking, expanding stuff like that. Then the surgeries started. The first time they just gassed me, but I woke up in the middle of someone taking a marrow sample, or that's what they told me. They started taking pieces of me, to see if I could control them away from my body. They literally tore me apart after they found out that I healed well. In fact one of the doctors got a funny idea. He gave the 'monster' local anesthetic so that I was aware as he cut open my chest. I could feel him pull out one of my kidneys. Hell, I should have died of shock or something, but I'm a lot tougher now. They would do that then patch me up and toss me back into the cell to rest for a few days before repeating the whole process. The whole time I had this itch in the back of my head. Like a faint voice you can barely hear. I didn't think about it then but now."
Shaking her head she stopped for a minute. Before looking at Max.
"You gotta understand before all this crap started, the worst I had done was get into a few fist fights. Sure I beat the crap out of a couple a guys way back when but they started it. Now I always had a bit of a temper but for the most part I was pretty laid back. Now though now it's like a constant urge to attack or something. Without the whole new place, new body thing going on, or the experiments and the need to get out of there I can feel it. I think that R.O.B. Or whatever he really is did more than just improve me. He wanted entertainment, and his new toy wandering off and being all peaceable would get old fast. I can feel something, like have you ever heard something but it was so faint that you thought you imagined it? That is what this feels like. An urge to go out and Move, to do something interesting, to fight maybe kill. Whatever changes he made I think he left some insurance to make sure he got his moneys worth."
Tears leaked out of her eyes as she looked at Max.
"When I escaped it was like all I could do was kill. Oh sure I think I could have killed if it came to that before, but this was like I was enjoying their fear. I should have just killed whoever was in my way to make my escape but instead I went to the top and waited for everyone to pass by me. And I killed them. I Killed Them! I liked it! I should have left but I didn't, I don't understand. The worst I had ever done before was beat someone up, you don't go from fist fights to killing people do you? I always knew that I was a bit twisted, but I never thought I would be capable of this. The worst part is that I don't feel bad about it. I feel bad about not feeling bad, how crazy is that. I guess they were right. I really am a monster"
Shocked Max lowered the gun. The crazy blue haired woman in front of him was having a breakdown. Awkwardly he tried to pat her on the back.
"Hey now you had a lot going on. Besides if what you're tellin me is true then this isn't all you, it's Rob or whoever that's to blame. Now you need to tell me what you know about what's going on so I can explain."
Wiping her tears away she told him in a shaky voice.
"Well when I died it was February twenty sixth, two thousand and twelve."
"Two thousand and twelve. Hell girlie you're from the future? It's two thousand and four."
"Oh joy I graduated High School this year. I wonder if I exist here? That would be weird, no one would recognize me though. Anyway I really don't know anything about mutants, hell the history must be different too since I doubt mutants have just cropped up in the last twenty years or so. This could be some bizarro world too. Did the Union win the Civil War? What about the World Wars?"
Cutting her off before she could begin to panic again. Max started to explain.
" Yes we won the civil war, and both World Wars as well. As towards current history. Well firstly you need to know about the MCO. The Mutant Commission Office. They want to track and register mutants to keep the normals 'safe'. Really you would be hard pressed to find a bigger pack of bigots out side the Knights of Purity. Another couple of groups to watch for are the Friends of Humanity, really the KKK with a different focus. Finally the Goodkinds are rich, really and they hate mutants. All three groups will hate you on principle. So it would be best to avoid them as much as possible. Not to mention various super villains."
With wide eyes Sean exclaimed.
" You really have supervillans! Wow this place sucks. People really hate mutants that much? Hell what am I saying of course they do. If they don't fear them then I'll bet they are jealous. But the whole registration thing, doesn't that violate some part of the constitution or something?"
Nodding his head Max agreed.
"Yes they do. The whole violating the constitution has been and still is argued back and forth by many groups. Anyway mutants stared showing up in the Twenties I think. Well anyway you had a bunch of folks even older than me, like the original Champion and stuff flying around, but that can wait. What you need to know is that Whateley is the safest place for you. Plus the people there can explain everything much better than an old man like me."
Giving her a long look he finally nodded to himself.
"Whatever happened in those mountains you still seem like a decent kid. The fact that you feel bad about it goes a long way. At Whateley they have a bunch of fancy gadgets. They can have this 'voice' looked at. Now the thing to do is to get you there in one piece. Hold on."
Getting up Max shuffled off into a back room returning with a map. Spreading it out only the center table.
"Now you are right here in Bismark Illinois. If you take the Highway out east."
Doing her best to memorize the instructions Sean followed his finger along the highway until it hit Manchester.
"I've got an old buddy in Manchester. You find your way to old Hank 'the Tank' Stevie's place and he will get you set up at Whateley. Okay. Woah!"
Overwhelmed by the knowledge that someone was actually helping her, Sean go up and hugged the old man.
"Thanks old man for believing me and for all the help. Otherwise I would have just driven until I ran out of gas. I'll find this Hank guy."
Startled by the contact he again patted her back awkwardly. Walking to the door he turned and handed her a manilla envelope.
"You give this to Hank, he'll know whats going about. Now you need to get out of hear. If you head straight out east for about two hours there's a little stop. A motel and a couple of burger doodles are about it but you should be able to get some food and rest for the night. I've got a couple of bucks if you need it. Now go on scram."
With a last goodbye Sean got back into her stolen car and headed east. Alone at last she could feel the little thing in her head urging her forward. Ignoring it she focused on the road. The hours passed quietly and she arrived at the little pit stop. A few dozen houses branched off a couple of side streets. And sure enough a Hardy's stood right next to a little flophouse. Pulling into the drive through she ordered several meals. Paying with some of her ill gotten cash she made her way to the motel. The receptionist was a weedy blonde woman with thick glasses and an ugly orange blouse. Not even giving her blue hair a second glance she handed over a key for room two oh three. Giving a quick thanks she marched up the stairs with her bag of food. Opening the door, she was surprised at how clean everything was.
"Wow I would have thought this place would be full of cockroaches, or worse spiders. This looks just like your average Motel 6 or something. Flopping down on the cheap mattress she quickly devoured her first real food in a month. Stretching out she quickly stripped and jumped in the shower. Luxuriating in the feel of the hot water on her skin, she spent quite awhile just standing there hoping the water would wash away the dirty feeling she had from killing all those people. Getting out she dried off.
"The worst thing is if I knew what I would have had to do to escape, I still would have done it. The voice is only a part of it. I really am a monster. And I'll probably have to kill more people later. This sucks. I guess the whole 'be careful what you wish for' is true. I wanted power, and adventure. Now I have it and all I had to do was die."
Letting out a manic giggle she flopped back down on the bed.
"I have an ancient being using me for entertainment with a whisper of its voice in the back of my brain. Not to mention everyone hates people like me and the only place that is safe is a school. Joy. Dealing with a bunch of kids and their angsty problems will be a real treat assuming I even make it there. Nothing I can do about it now, I just have to survive to get there."
With that she rolled over and quickly fell asleep.
