I think you are forgetting to bold the most relevant part of this discussion (relative to the general issue discussed there rather than the specific point you were adressing, granted)
He rubbed his face, tapping his fingers on the cyborg half. "I should yell at you for not keeping up your backups. Still... the divergence might be good. That way, once you go girl, you could marry yourself. Keep it all in the family."
"Dad! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!"
"Alright, alright. Don't get so worked up. It was just an idea."
"Well it was a BAD ONE!"
"You don't have to be so sensitive."
"Sensitive?" I couldn't help screeching a bit. No, it wasn't an infusion of girl-ness. It's just that some situations call for screeching. "Sensitive? You remember the whole 'Let's turn the Mediterranean into grape jelly and then hold the world's bread for ransom' idea? Well, this one's worse!"
"That almost worked, you know. If only I hadn't overlooked the tortilla."
I tried to get me breathing under control. "No clones! No downloads! Period."
|
Gizmatic definitely thought of doing that and he even liked that idea. You know how devisors are when an idea get into their head...
And Jobe did not like it. Not one bit.

It only makes sense if the latter.

Former, actually. He does say he hates this technology and doesn't want to use it, so there'd be no reason for him to dutifully keep up to date.

Unless he hasn't updated the program since elementary school, and in the meantime just tried to trick the program into thinking it had been upgraded since, which could lead to weird side-effects later on.

Well, he could be lying in the more usual form of "not admitting the full extent of the infraction to the parental units, only the part he has an acceptable excuse for." It's like admitting you haven't done your homework for the last week (while there was some sort of routine disruption, like relatives visiting), instead of admitting you haven't been doing it for a couple months (with no excuse).
Jobe has a believable excuse for forgetting to backup since September due to being very busy at Whateley and having his old routine disrupted; Gizmatic would be disappointed, but not really angry. If he copped to not having made a backup in two years, he would have no excuse.
It's all part of normal dynamic between rebelious teenagers and strict parents and... what I'm saying? Those are Jobe and Gizmatic! Normal does not enter here.
Don't call me Shirley. You will surely make me surly.

Actually they have parts of a normal relationship, which put in contrast with the rest is hilarious. Like the "you should call more often!" line at the end.

The contrast between the parenting of Gizmatic and Dr Diabolik is interesting/amusing, too, although most of the latter is just hearsay from Jadis. There've been glimpses at several other parents of Bad Seeds as well.

Yeah. Let me see the other ones I recall...
Dragonrider: it seems that the Devilmaster is quite a good and caring parent, and he didn't intend to let his... second profession... ever reaching his kids. It happened anyway, but he is still very protective of his daughter.
Thrasher: Mach-5 went straight for the sake of his family. Well, except when he hits JPL for some high-tech materials in order to make a killer Christmas gift for his son...
Silver Serpent: pretty much what one would expect from the Iron Dragon. Rather old-fashioned, and sees his daughter a bit like a servant.
Rosethorn: serious Mom issues there. Unknown (possibly even from Mom) father.
Nephandus: Dad seems to be of the "training the kid to take over the family's (villainous) business" school of parenting.
Nacht: Not much respect for Mom. Legal guardian attempts to give her a "normal" family life, complete with white Christmases and festive sweaters. Kate professes to dislike it. Personally, I think the lady doth protest too much, perhaps in both cases.
Cheese, Winter, Render, Psike, Damien Faust: not much info.

Yeah, in Nacht's words, "Give Mumzie her due, she's a total loss otherwise, but she does have a flair for getting out of Azkaban." Sure sounds like she has no love for the Bell Witch, doesn't it?
But then... a teenager calling her parent a "loser." Where, oh where, have I seen that before? And how often do they really MEAN it?

I think that it could be more telling the discussion between Natch and Jadis in The Three Little Witches:
| The Three Little Witches | She-Beast made a dismissive noise. "PLEASE! Those three? D'you honestly think that they wouldn't find out about Devil's Cave? Linds, that cave is serious bad news. They'll take you out there your sophomore year in a field trip, so you can get a good idea as to what sort of nastiness is really out there. Believe me, when we went there, Kate here was scared snotless."
"Was not."
"Was too!"
"Was not. I had a cold."
"Yes you were! You were ready to call for your mommy!"
"If I were frightened, my mother would be the last person that I'd call for."
"Whatever. Linds, the only way to keep those three from poking around Devil's Cave, is to make it as scary as possible. Believe me, Grimes would be happy that we did it this way."
|
How much to read in it is anyone guess.
