This may be a problem at my end but I'm needing to login nearly every but not every time I enter a subforum. I'm using the latest version of opera.

No, I'm not blocking cookies, however since I posted that, my browser has crashed three times so I'm guessing the problem is on my end.

Did you disconnect from the internet?
the forum has some rather silly security settings that make you re-log if your IP changes.
For me this means every time I visit the site cus my IP is dynamic and not stable at all.

For me, it's even worse. Most of the time I spend here is on my netbook. I'm a computer consultant, so I spend my time travelling from site to site - and on my broadband hotspot. I can change networks twelve or more times in a day, let alone IP addresses.
So I'm always having to log in again.

Unfortunately, decent security almost always means a degree of inconvenience.

On some sites, there's a setting to allow the cookie to work from multiple locations, as long as it's the same computer. I don't know about this board system, as I haven't looked at the code base.
I've been logging in from multiple locations for several years now, I just mentioned it now. Obviously, it's irritating, but not debilitating.

I always wondered what ever reason there was for FUDForum including that IP binding anyway. If you want to know if it's the same browsing session, a session cookie is better. If you want to know it's the same person, a permanent login cookie on each browser and computer (or USB stick since I know some of my friends carry their own no-install firefox on their keychain) they use to log in, with a timeout of maybe 30 days or so, would be better. I happen to have a steady IP even if it's dynamically issued so it's not a problem for me except for me often changing my browser (I use all of Opera snapshots, Aurora/Firefox alpha, Chrome regular releases, Safari regular releases and even sometimes IE x64), but I know many connection types, especially wireless broadband connections or many-to-few IP mappings like our university library wifi, favour IP pooling which means that you can't even rely on the same IP during one single session.

In some parts of the world (like Germany), DSL connections that will give you a new IP with every login are still common. So if you shut down your computer for the night, you will have a different IP the next day (and some ISPs will even forcibly disconnect you after 24 hours => new IP after reconnect).
For me it is not much of a hassle, as I have the password stored in my browser and can log in again with one click. But it may explain some of the "random logouts".

One way to ease logins - even if you use different computers / different browsers - is to use a password manager. OK, so your password are being stored on a third-party computer, but any worth their salt (e.g. LastPass) will do all the encryption / decryption at your end, so only 256-bit AES encrypted versions of your passwords will be seen by them. Some are available as browser add-ons, so will work cross-platform: some are also available for multiple different browsers (e.g. Firefox, Chrome/Chromium, Opera, Safari) and even mobile platforms (e.g. iOS, Android - although with LastPass those two require their Premium [paid for] version).

Plenty of alternatives, many of them free, and for pretty much any platform you can think of. (I use the same app on both Linux and Symbian, so I can share the password database between them.)

A quick 'net search reveals oodles of password managers - both in the form of desktop clients (run on your OS, separate from any browsers) and purely browser-based (run within your browser, regardless of OS). Some are proprietary, others are open source. Some will work on selected browsers / OSes, others will work on most.
Generally speaking, if you're interested in an online password manager, it's probably a good idea to do some research first: do a few 'net searches to find ones compatible with the range of browsers and OSes you use, then read their websites / review sites / look at screenshots / Wikipedia entries to work out which you think is the best fit for your needs.
