I read a Sci-Fi story years ago about an Architect who is contracted to build a tomb for an alien that's practically revered as a god on their planet. The weird bit was the method of travel, they were put into a cryo-suspended animation, their consciousness was downloaded and 'beamed' somehow to the world where a vat clone was waiting to receive them.

Anybody remember the name of this story? Anybody even heard of it?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm... I don't know that specific story, but this sounds like it could be something in the same universe as Richard K. Morgan's "Altered Carbon."

Hmm, not sure.

I also remember his solution to the tomb was to build a highly reflective rocket that put the alien into orbit. It shown so everyone could see it as it orbited. It also, oddly enough wasn't air tight so (and the old alien knew it when he/she/it boarded) so the leader asphyxiated and decompressed on the way up so it was kind of an assisted suicide. I'm not sure if there was a 'time travel' aspect to it (IE if the transmission was relativistic or FTL in nature). But I think the main character didn't seem upset about taking the job, IE he didn't seem to act like everyone he'd ever know would be dead when he returned.

Also there was a precog element in that the alien 'leader' fashioned a statue of the architect with a triumphant, smug expression showing he'd solved the issue before he had. Now that I think on it, I think the leader had a collection of statues it had made, perhaps of all the aliens, like something out of the original Clash of the Titans..
