If it looks like you just Rolled your fingers randomly across the keyboard to register here, I'll delete the account. Unlike some sites that allow automatic registration. I STILL look at and approve EVERY registration.

Good plan. Some of the boards I run get dozens of phony registrations per day. Be especially suspicious of IPs from China, the former USSR, and Germany.

I guess this is a decent place to put this, my computer got hacked and I may have logged in here in the time it was hacked, not sure what type of hack yet, but it was nasty, and I'm having to change passwords. Hopefully I haven't done anything or caused problems in the meantime, but this is a heads up.

Oh, and if you're using XP, be aware of XP Security 2012, it's not benign, and I have no idea where it came from.

Ouch! Yeah that probably is as nasty as the 2011 and 2010 versions.

As are the Win 7 variants.

Annoying as all get out. Seems like it may come from TVTropes, so watch out there.

It's a sad thing when your paraphrase is longer than the original quote. Survivor of the Great Crash of 2011

The popular sources these days for that damn "Security" virus is through the ads websites host on their pages. The website itself has no control over the ads, and the virus creator/hacker/distributor/whatever can in essence affect a larger number of people through the ad media that gets run.

Misty : “It’s not going to be like this every day, is it?”
“Lord, no,” Jadis replied. “Sometimes, it gets weird.”

Hank Declan shook his head, disbelieving. "Tell me I did not just see them roshambo for victory."

If it helps, the most common vector for that set of extortion-ware is through Adobe Acrobat reader.

What happens is that there's an iframe (or flash), with an embedded PDF (corrupted executable). Because the browser loads PDF files directly, it executes. You don't see it because the frame is exactly one pixel square.

Three things that you can do, in order of worst to best.

1) Keep Adobe Acrobat and upgrade to the latest version.
2) Remove Adobe Acrobat, and put in Foxit Reader.
3) Disable PDF viewing in your browser. Make it require that you save it to the desktop, then open it manually.
4) Do 2 and 3.
