The Unicorn

In Christmas Crisis the scientists claim what she does should only be possible if she had the mass of a neutron star. Since Tennyo seems to have control of her inertia and gravity (or their effects at any rate) on a subconscious level it occurs to me that it's quite possible she HAS the mass of a neutron star (assuming of course the term 'mass' has a meaning separate from it's effect on gravity and inertia)

The Unicorn

I suspect that's Frank Delarose's personal recollection of what the scientists said. I imagine that the scientists really said something less definitive, like "given current understanding of Einsteinian physics and discounting what might be explicable through pattern theory, the effect should only be possible if one had the mass of a neutron star to work with, but..."

Let's be fair. The scientists involved (at Whateley) ought to be experts on mutant powers and physics, and have devisor/gadgeteer/exemplar gifts that would make Kip Thorne and Steven Hawking gasp in amazement. They're not going to walk around making statements that sound like this.

Diane

Here's what was actually said:

ChristmasCrisis

“I’ve been tapped to head the investigation from our end anyway. I’ll have the clearance. It’s just that the only answers my people came up with all ended with, ‘We know what happened. It’s just impossible.’”

“That’s our Tennyo. The Impossible Girl. Bet it had something to do with, It makes perfect sense, if she has at least the mass of a neutron star. Otherwise it’s just impossible’.”

“Hmmm… Exactly what they told me. You’ve encountered this before?”

“Similar. Tell them not to go bonkers over it. Some of the best minds on the planet haven’t clue as to how she does it. Just assume there’s more out there than we currently know. And rumor has it her abilities are associated with some kind of space legend anyway. So there’s a lot of room for learning more.”

First off, it's a conversation between two old friends, and they're not going to get into a discussion of technicalities that neither is competent to evaluate anyway.

Second, Frank's opinion is clearly that the science types don't have a clue what's going on. They're just guessing, and he's seen enough of that to be able to spot it. He has, after all, been at Whateley for quite some time.

Agreed. I believe I made that point. Well, I tried to. Sad

Of course they're guessing! We know enough about Tennyo's history and genetics to know that they're centuries away from the science theory to piece all this together. (I disagree with Dr. Gellmar that they're millions of years away. Look at how far sciences have evolved in just the last 100 years.)

But that doesn't mean that the scientists are walking around saying stuff that makes them look like retarded clowns. That was my point, even if I did not clarify that. They will make their best guesses, but couch them in terms that are reasonable. And they ought to be stating their hypotheses like the hyper-competent scientists they are supposed to be, rather than like a mob of dimwits.

Okay, so my personal life is showing through. I've worked with enough scientists to know how top-notch people state their 'guesses' when confronted with new problems, and they come across as intelligent men and women making rational hypotheses with ideas about reasonable steps to move forward scientifically. And that's real scientists, not super-genius exemplars and gadgeteers and devisors in the Whateley world. So how can the Whateley people be less competent than real scientists?

I think that in order to be a successful devisor or mad scientist, you must first master the Art of Hyperbole. Clearly, Dr. Gellmar is such a master!

Isn't that a prerequisite for the Advanced Melodrama Workshop with visiting professor Manga Khan?

That's a requirement for any succesful scientist. Or rather any scientist who expects to be able to get a grant for anything.

After Thad gave Bill the brownie, he also gave Bill instructions to think about Ryoko.

William Wilson, if allowed to mutate natuarally would likely have been a shape-shifter or mimic. Unfortuneately (or fortuneately) that power was burned out during the transformation and Billie became what her fevorish mind could come up with.

Bill(ie) knew that Ryoko was an alien with increadible powers (I think, I really am not a huge Anime fan).

I think if not for Thad the ELB (Evil Little Brother) Bill would probubly have ended up in Hathorne because of being an unstable shape-shifter.

I don't think that would necessarily be the case, as Bill was able to mentally direct the direction of his shapeshift into Tennyo. Which suggests that to me, he would have been able to control his shapshifting.

How complete or powerful a shapeshifter, he would have been is more questionable.
Certainly not enough to shifted as fully as he has done into Tennyo, as that took:
X-Amine + triggered burnout + suggestability side-effect of X-Amine + burning out of the shift-ability + any power that Star Killer may have added to the mix
to do it.

Did Fey and Sara tell Tennyo (or if they believed it was deliberate confront her) about Jade's demon mark? I remember they discovered it in Jade 8 but don't recall anything after that.

No, as far as we have seen they have not revealed that Tenryo has claimed Jade yet. Though really its going to be an INCREDIBLY interesting conversatino when it comes up.

Just reading some old stories again, and something popped out. Don't think its been mentioned.

The demon Tennyo 'ate' was described in terms of red filaments. In Jade 8, tennyo's final, when she gets really pissed
"Each orb was filled with struggling filaments of neon red"

Any connection? Smile

I'm guessing no, but you'll have to wait for the author to get the straight scoop.

Remember that what Jinn saw was magic. That's all. It's just that Jinn doesn't see light. She sees mutant powers as violet or ultraviolet, and she sees magic as a laser red, and she sees emotions as colors.

I've also dug out a possible connection:

In Ill Winds part one, the Grove tells Fey that the Bastard is part Great Old One (or merely one of their minions?).

In Ill Winds IV, Tennyo tells Fey how she ate one of the voodoo weres and found it really tasty.

In Dr. Bender's Field Guide to the Chuthulu Mythos the Destroyer is mentioned.
"It was a weapon created thousands of years ago to destroy the Great Old Ones (GOOs) by a race of hyper intelligent aliens. Somehow, they used a long forgotten technology to fuse aspects of GOO physiology with the ordered physiology of regular life (more on that under the GOO's section), creating a being that could literally eat the Great Old Ones."
Could that be the mysterious Star Stalker Tennyo is somehow linked to?
