Thank you for the work in putting back up the site.

AlthoughI noticed that the section for new character concepts is missing.

Thanks to the admins for their hard work at this time. I am confident that this will not be a problem for long. You all do a great job and should be commended again and again for what you do on this site.

Eh, it seems like it happens every so often. This shall be known as the Great Server Crash of '11!

At least the Wiki information is still there.

I was worried when the site went down yesterday. Losing so much of the forum history is a bit of an embuggerance, but I'm glad the site itself is still working.

I am really thankfull to the people whom have worked really hard to get the site back up ASAP. I work with a bank and even there we have had our share of unreadable back-ups and the frustrations to go with something like that.

THANKS

Yours, Leo

I have backed up the stories and lib. But did not backup the forums. Mistake on my part and I apologize.

That being said I am currently working on locating a sufficiently uptodate backup of the forums themselves and will inform the admin if I acquire such a backup.

In looking through all my HDD space I have not found a backup of our forums.

I am sorry but what we have is the most current I was able to find and that was via wayback machine.

Aplogies if this is an old topic or misplaced, but is there a way to donate $ to help with upkeep? This place is of some value to me and I dont have any other way of showing it...

Rubberjohn indicated on the Great Thanks thread that he had .mht files of a fair amount of material

It may be that we, the readers, may be of some help in the restoration of the lost information from the site. I'm sure that I can't be the only one who saves items of interest to their own computer. In addition to all the Canon stories, I know that I have most, if not all, Fan Fiction posts (including some 18 pages of Micro Scenes) since I first started lurking in the shadows around three years ago and I have a lot of the Canon Material and Canon Material Comments posts as well. I save them in .mht format so I don't now if this is of any help.

John.
reposting back from the .mht's to the forums isn't going to be trivial, but it is possible.

What a mixed bag for me. Regained the Letomo nick, but lost all PMs. Lost all my stories; checked the caches, and they cached all the discussion, but none of the actual stories. So, it's all gone.

On the other hand, I was thinking of redoing it. Guess this just pushes that.

And a rough way to learn the all important lesson of employing ridiculous layers of backups when you're writing. Back up your notes. Back up your conversations. Backup your drafts... not just saving over them but literally keeping every draft saved as a separate version and back up all of those.

Emailing them yourself works in a lot of cases these days... since word docs are miniscule compared to modern email storage capacities. Saving to a flash drive and/or burning CD's regularly is a wise option as well (in case you lose passwords or get hacked on the email account).

I'd check with rubberjohn on what he has on the .mht files before you give up. The easiest way to read them is with internet explorer, but they are just modified html files.

By the way, did somebody banned become un-banned because of the crash?

None that I can think of.

Dr.Troll. I haven't trolled the internet for seven years to be called Mr.

On an unrelated matter, or related depending on how you look at it, how does a single crash eliminate both the source and the backups? Presumably one wouldn't store the backup files for any media on the media that is being backed up.
